Question:

What should I sell on eBay?

I'm from the Uk and I want to make a bit of money using eBay, not as a proper job, just something that I can make a decent amount of money from. Any ideas what I should sell and where I can get products cheaply? I'm a member of Costco, a Cash and Carry, should I be looking to get things from there?

  1. Your house...or your life...lol

  2. Try sellig games high in demand. Naruto ninja storm and dragon bal z:burst limit are some examples.

  3. From the UK or *IN* the UK?

I don't know the laws of the United Kingdom nor do I know the products but here in the United States, there are many advantages to having a business registered, licensed and insured that can help to protect you legally and financially. You see, if you sell a product even if you are not the manufacturer you can be sued if the product or even packaging causes injury. With that said, you can be reported whether your sale is for hobby or for profit so I do recommend that you look into a legitimate business that will allow you to write off certain business expenses that you would normally pay out of your own pocket. Here in the US, you are allowed to run a business at a loss for a couple of years.

Are you looking to export goods to other countries? If so, make sure you are fully aware of the export rules. There are some governments that have strict regulations on what can and cannot be exported so make sure you know what you're doing and figure in the shipping and customs/duties fees, etc. when pricing your products.

As for what to sell, the rules are to buy low and sell high so it doesn't matter WHERE you get your products from so long as you find a need and fill it. The goal of selling is to provide the right product at the right price at the right time. What target market do you wish to sell to and what do they want, need, and/or have the money for??? It may sound simple in theory but if there were a set formula for success everyone would be rich and selling on Ebay.

You can check Ebay for historical sales to give an idea of what's hot. Because you can sort searches from high price to low price, spend some time looking for just single letters of the alphabet from A to Z in 26 seperate searches. You can then look into the different categories. Naturally cars are going to be high priced items so there's no need to go there unless you want to sell cars. Look at the sales of books with the letter A from high price to low. Check out how many bids there were to have the product sold at those high prices. A little common sense can help you. You'll want to sell things that are in demand and hard to find. Check out yard sales and estate sales and wherever you can get collectibles, books, and other products that are easy to buy, sell and ship.

Keep in mind that customers buy mainly for 4 reasons: to make money, to save money, to save time, and to get peace of mind. When setting up your business, sell products that you are passionate about not what's going to earn you alot of money. When you are known as the "go to" guy for your product niche, you will have customers referring you. You can brand yourself with an image whether that's discount or premium. Your reputation should have value and your ads should all highlight the features and benefits of the products you are selling. Get to know your customers. What else do they want/need??? Ask them. If you sell books, consider selling bookmarks. If you sell Christmas ornaments, consider selling cards or tags or tree skirts as well.

It is great that you're thinking on a small scale of just making extra money but with that philosophy, you'll stay small. Think big!!! You would be better off building a business and then selling it or hiring out for others to do the work for you. Don't consume your time with bookkeeping and shipping and whatever tasks aren't making you money... hire out others.

Consider selling products for local businesses once you have a decent amount of feedback to boast about. Many shops don't have the time or resources to sell online and I am not only talking Ebay. You may want to open an Ebay store or your own website or partner with other local sellers to buy and/or sell so it's a win-win situation.

I know that I have rambled on telling you far more than the question you asked but there are no formulas. Sell what you love. You can sell almost anything but know your competition, know your customers and know yourself.

    Success is not a destination ... it's a journey!!!

  4. Any mark-up you might be able to get on readily-available mass-produced items will be small, your target market will be those who either live in small towns far away from these retailers, or the housebound.  For anyone else  whatever that small markup is will probably be eaten up entirely by the cost of shipping - they won't buy from you.

The best way is to find a niche market you know something about and have outside sources of supply of items that aren't seen every day.  eBay had its roots in antiques and collector's items and those who are expert in those areas still do very well.  eBay did not start out as the massive eBay store owner with hundreds or thousands of listings of common c**p at fixed prices.
