What should I serve for afternoon tea?

Hi :-)

My friend is coming to visit me for afternoon tea.

I'd rather not make anything (as I'm not the best baker!) but would love some ideas as to what to serve her?

My Mum suggested some shortbread, which sounds nice, can anybody suggest any nice cakes, biscuits or pastries I could serve?

I could go to my local bakery and see if I could buy your suggestions freshly made for our tea

You can get apple / apple and custard scrolls/ buns they are yummy.

high Tea is lovely, and you can make some of the things yourself without having to be a professional baker. It usually includes things like small finger sandwhiches (on fresh bread with the crusts off) such as salmon and cream cheese, devilled egg, cucumber, as well as little cakes and pastries - cupcakes, danishes, fresh scones with fresh cream and strawberry jam, and biscuits - all of which you can buy at the local bakery/supermarket. Its especially nice when served with specialty teas and/or champers!

Cheese sandwiches cut into small parts, small croissants drizzled with honey.

Since you can't cook try cucumber sandwiches! Get white bread. First cut them into little squares making sure there is not crust. Then spread a thin layer of mayonnaise on the top and bottom. Finally put a thinish slice of cucumber inbetween. Some people sprinkle dill on the cucumber too, but if you don't like dill then don't bother.

If all else fails then you can make deviled eggs.

Also, good shortbread is very hard to make. Scones with clotted cream and strawberry preserves are delicious as well.

  In England they serve biscotti with tea during the afternoon. Biscotti goes very well with tea.
