Im 16, and about 5'7 and 200 lbs. Im kinda bigger, but in okay physical shape and have alot of endurance. Ive recently gotten interested in MMA, and i was wondering what I should do from here to get started with it. Was thinking about getting some gloves and sparring with a friend just to see what i could do at first. But what else should I do?

Whats a good workout so I can get in better shape?

I have an elyptical machine, an ab lounge, and a resistance weight bench [Up to 100 lbs]. And might be getting a hvy bag when i get gloves/etc.

  1. Well elypticals are not what you want you should be running and biking for mma.  Secondly considering you weigh 200lbs you will probably benefit more from push ups(alternate normal, knuckles, diamond, wides) than that puny 100lbs weight bench.

You also have to go somewhere and take lessons.  You can't teach yourself what is necessary through playing around with some friends and watching mma.  I would go to the nearest fight gym in your area and start getting lessons.  If there isn't a gym nearby that offers both stand up and ground, then you can acquire both separately

Secondly you weight a lot for your height so you might want to drop down to at least 185.  I am 5'9''  and a muscular 195 but I know for sure that I would have to drop to 185 cause the 205s will be too tall, and heavy for me to handle. Being only 5'7'' you might even want to drop to 170.

Sorry this might not be what you want to hear but it's the truth.

Once you join a fight gym they will take care of you and get you some fights when they feel that you are ready.

Good luck and I hope you take this stuff to heart.

  2. If you are 5'7'' 200lbs you should probably get on a treadmill first.

  3. go to some MMA classes

  4. you should go and find a close mma club so you could get some lessons, go to www.fightauthority.com they have some good workouts you could do.

  5. you need to join a gym and start lifting weights.  go to bodybuilding.com for exercises and workouts.  Also, all MMA fighters need wrestling experience so join ur school's wrestiling team.  if ur serious about this, ur gonna have to start doing some sort of cardio plus weight training basically everyday. if u take days off from lifting, u should still do cardio(run, swim, bike, basketball or whatever u want).  EAT AND SLEEP

  6. No offense, but getting out of your dad's headlocks and getting out of a rear naked choke are completely different.

Its a great workout but you have to commit to it. You have to work every single day to get better. 5'7, 200 lbs is kinda big, and you would need to some cardio to get into shape and to build your gas tank. MMA needs conditioning.

Look up MMA gyms in your phonebook, check them out and make sure they're good. Get a reasonable price too.

Remember, MMA is nothing like what you see in "Never Back Down".
