Question:

What should I tell my coworkers?

I have a part-time job at college where only students work and we're paid on an hourly basis - whoever has more hours per week is paid more. I've been working there longer than everyone else so my boss lets me choose how many hours & which shifts I want.. and most of the time my hours are more than anyone else's. One of my coworkers always wants to know if I request my supervisor for those shifts. Would it be rude to tell her that he allowed me to pick my shifts?

  1. Ask your supervisor, first.  You don't want to ruin any agreement and trust you have with your supervisor.  Maybe ask the supervisor to talk with your coworker so you don't have to look like the "bad guy" or perceived as one getting "favors."

  2. In work situations, it is usually best to keep any special treatment you receive to yourself.  Co-workers get jealous and angry about that kind of thing and I'd hate to see you lose your ability to choose your hours.

  3. It is not rude, but it is not a good idea to tell.

  4. no it wouldn't be rude..u can tell him in a very nice way

  5. Talk to your supervisor first; tell him/her about you been question by a coworker , about your hours and shifts .

ask him/her what is the best answerere you can give them.  and when you get  the answerer; just tell the  co-workers exactly what your supervisor tells you.

    the co-worker is nosey

  6. It is not rude of you, just say that since you have been working there for so long that you get to ask for certain shifts...

    Good Luck...

  7. No i'd just tell her the truth

"I've worked here for so long they let me pick my shifts now"

  8. U should tell her that the Boss runs a loose-shift and is allowing u 2 work whatever shift you want. As well, u shouldn't make enemies so try 2 work out the shifts with her! Get together with her and create a plan 4 each of ur shifts! U may not like it, but it's worth it than 2 have a co-worker enemy in the long run!

  9. I wouldn't answer her directly. When she asks you again, you should look past the immediate question and get to the heart of the matter - she's interested in getting more hours for herself.

So you could say "I bet if you want to work some overtime you could talk to the boss and see what he says."

  10. It might be a bad idea, because it would lead them to believe that you're being favoured. Ask your boss about whether or not he thinks it would be a good idea. Whether you tell them or not, though, just let them know that in most workplaces seniority applies, and because of that you are entitled to have more shifts. I don't really know what to tell you about whether or not you should tell them that you get to choose, just make sure that your boss is in line with whether you're keeping mum or not.

  11. no

  12. Your coworker's persistent questioning is rude. Tell the coworker that it is private and you do not feel comfortable discussing shift equity with him or her. That is the end of it. If he or she has a problem with the shift schedule and pay checks, he or she should discuss it with the boss. Not with you. You do not shape the policies on who gets what shift and how much money.

    Some rules:

NEVER DISCUSS why you  have shift schedules or what your pay check is with coworkers. That will only create disharmony and they will complain about unfair treatment to the boss. And whenever they complain, they will cite YOU as the source of their information. Your boss may even get annoyed with you.

  13. I would politely say, "Well, it's something I've worked out with him. Why don't you talk to him about what you need?"

  14. No, but  I bet she will go ballistic that you can chose your shifts. It really is none of her business.

  15. No, don't do that..it could backfire on you.

  16. No. Don't do that because you may end up getting a lot of jealousy thrown your way and that wouldn't be good for you. They could also be so envious that they would go out of their way to hurt your salary in some way.

You can also talk to your supervisor and ask him what he would say. He may tell you to tell them or not to, I don't know. I still think it wouldn't cool for you to tell them. Just tell her it's probably just because you've been there longer but don't actually say that's what it is.

  17. It's actually quite normal for an employee with more length of service to get first choice of shifts.  The number of hours is a bit different though, and if your manager isn't giving everyone an equal opportunity then he may be guilty of discrimination.

To tell your colleagues will probably create some hard feelings but you are actually an innocent party in this.

To not tell your colleagues would be to hide something, and believe me when I tell you that those sort of things never work out well.  If someone finds out, you end up looking guilty.

So I would suggest an honest discussion with your friends, and perhaps approach the manager together to ask about how the scheduling policy was determined and what the options are for making it more equitable.

You may end up with fewer hours but you will have done the right thing.

  18. Depends, is this something that your boss is not supposed to do?

Talk to your boss about what to say before you say anything to her, after all he may be sticking his neck out on your behalf

  19. no it wouldn't because u have that privilege because you've been working their for longer...they don't cuz they haven't worked as long as you...

  20. You do not owe your Co-worker any explanation.

Just say the Supervisor is in charge of the scheduling - and don't say anything else.

Don't tell your Co-worker that you are allowed to pick your shifts...it will create bad feelings.

  21. I don't know if it would be rude but it would be a really bad idea.

  22. It would be dumb to tell her because it is bound to cause resentment and jealousy. Just keep saying "I'm just lucky I guess and hope she gets another job. Your life will be a misery if she finds out and foments rebellion with the other workers.
