I'm trying to restore an old chess set that I recently got, but I cant seem to get into the cracks of the board where the dust has collected over the years. Are there any recommendations as to how I would do this with out damaging the board?

  1. You can buy a product called "canned air" or "pressurized air" or something like that.  It comes in a can like an aerosol can, and you should be able to get it at a computer store.  It works wonders for a job like that.

What is the board  made of?  That would determine how you proceed from there.  In the areas of the board you can wipe, use a soft damp cloth if a little water will not hurt the board.   Other options for cleaning might be to use a little vinegar, again depending on what the board is made of.  Do a search for "how to clean old ???" (whatever the board is made of) and you will probably find suggestions.

    Best of luck with it.

  2. A soft, natural-bristled brush or canned air?

  3. I use a soft, clean paint brush.

  4. You should try putting your mouth level with the cracks, with your face at the side of the board, and blowing. Just make sure you don't spit when you do it!

Don't use tissue or anything else that can leave residue between the cracks. If you can find some sturdy sponge, you should try that. Just not a cheap one, as it can flake off if it snags on something. You just need to squeeze it tight, then put it in the crack and let it expand, then drag it along the crack.

As the person above me said, a paintbrush will also work. Just make sure you don't use anything wet, even water. If the dirt is really grounded in, you'll have to use somethign sturdier than a paint brush.

    Good luck!
