What should I visit in Montreal?

I'm going to be going to Montreal, Quebec in August, and I've never even been out of the United States before. I'll only have about a half a day open for any sight-seeing, so I was wondering what some must-visit places are. Thank you!

  1. i would go to the capital

  2. You are going to Montreal so answers like "go to the capital" and "don't go to Montreal" are kind of not helpful to you. Not sure why people do that. But sorry, that's just me ranting again...

I live here in Montreal, and if all you have is about a half day, I'd suggest the following:

Check out the Old Port of Montreal, mainly around St. Paul Street and Place Jacques-Cartier...hopefully you are seeing it on a Friday night or weekend when the local artists and merchants are out.

Go North from Old Port along St. Urbain (3-4 blocks) and you should get to Chinatown, which is worth a visit.

Walk a bit further north and you will reach Complexe Desjardins and the Museum of Contemporary Art.

If you are not into art, you can catch the nearby subway (our subway is called the Metro) at Place des Arts or Complexe Desjardins and take the GREEN line to PIE IX station, where the Olympic Stadium, Biodome, and Botanical Gardens are located.

Take the subway (green line) back to PEEL or GUY-CONCORDIA station and you will be in the downtown core. There are many bars, restaurants, and clubs in this area, as well as shopping.

All of that should give you a feel for Montreal and occupy your day. Along the way, you may want to stop in at Notre-Dame Cathedral, Bonsecours Market, Place Bonaventure, or Centre Eaton. There are also horse-drawn carriage tours of Old Montreal if you have the time.

Hope that helps you. You can get an idea for the area using the maps supplied on the website I attached.

  3. The biodome.

Forget visiting places go eat. The poutine is a must.

  4. Don't go to Montreal. Go to Toronto instead. Check out this website for details.

  5. since one capital is in ottawa and the other in québec it would be hard to do that in Montréal.  Half day best bet is going to old montreal, down by the river.  Old buildings, buskers for street entertainment, good restaurants, nice people watching.

shoulda been here for the jazz festival last week.  that is a real party.
