I can shop Target, Old Navy, Kohls'-type stores. I'll be site-seeing and need comfy but cute shoes. I don't want to stand out too much otherwise as a tourist. Would like to wear something cute by their standards but can't afford Milan fashions.

  1. Don't wear shorts as you will stick out like an American.  Also, just look put together as the others said below!!

  2. Awww I'm so jealous!!! I've just moved to NY from Rome and I want to go back!!!

Anyway, In Rome the weather usually is like in NY, but this year it's supposed to be very very hot!

I would suggest tank tops and t shirts, and bring a couple of sweaters because at night it will be cooler. You can bring shorts but if you want to go to the Vatican bring at least a pair of long pants/jeans and a regular t-shirt, or they won't let you in! Maybe a jeans Jacket, capri pants...as for the shoes wait til you get there, you'll find really nice ones!!!

If you need some more info email me, all the people I know still live there and I can keep you updated!

    Have a great trip!

  3. italy is summer also and you should wear your best summer clothes, but remember to atleast take your best sweater because it gets a little chilly at night.........everyone in italy pretty much wears the same kind of clothes as us,so you don't have to be worried about the expensive stuff.......just wear what makes you feel your best......

  4. Italy is pretty fashion conscious, and most of Europe is as well.  Just avoid the typical lazy American clothes (T-shirts with slogans, wrinkled unfitting clothes, and sneakers) and dress with a bit of class.  I took 'convertible' pieces like slinky black skirts and shirts that would mix n match, and wore leather sandals.  I actually never had anyone ask if I was a tourist (and was approached by other Americans who thought I was French!).  Of course, if you have a map and phrase book, you'll stand out a bit, but nothing says 'TOURIST' like a high school type backpack and dirty Nikes!

Good luck, have a WONDERFUL trip! :)

  5. Italians and Europeans in general are very stylish and put a lot more thought into what they wear than Americans do.

I live here in Italy but can't afford Milan fashions either so I always shop Target, Old Navy, TJ Maxx, etc., when I am at home. (And once you are here you can always check out Zara the European equivalent of an Old Navy but with a bit more style). A few tips:

-- You can never go wrong with black.

-- Italians don't do over-sized t-shirts or tank tops that aren't fitted or tailored. They also don't wear shorts (although a new trend is the kind of short/capri pant that hits just below the knee).

-- Summer is Rome is hot and sticky. Some nice dresses or skirts and tops will keep you cool but not have you stick out as a tourist.

-- Always carry a wrap (scarf) to wrap around your shoulders or around your waist to go into churches. No bare arms/shoulders or short skirts allow.

-- Italian women accessorize -- so a put together look with sunglasses, headbands, jewelry belt, etc. will make you look more local. And for easy packing bring neutral colors that mix and match and then use accessories to change your outfit (I'm starting to feel like a Glamour article but I guess they are right.)

-- You'll be doing a lot of walking so shoes are important, but Italians don't wear sneakers (unless they are expensive designer sneakers). This is where I would recommend you invest a bit in a very comfortable pair of all-purpose walking shoes or sandals. I like Ecco, Clarks, Geox -- all expensive brand names but your feet will thank you (although I got a great pair of black Clarks at TJ Maxx for $20 so if you search you may get lucky).

-- Don't carry a backpack. This signals you out as a tourist and actually is less safe than a shoulder bag that you hold close to your body and always keep a hand on.

Here are a couple of links to outfits that you could get away with in Rome and not scream, "tourist" just to get you started:

  6. The lady above me got it right for the most part.  Just remember that Italian women dress very feminine.  You would look very American wearing jeans and sneakers like most American women do.  Think capri's, fitted tops, sandals with a heal, etc.

    Buon vacanza!
