Question:

What should I wear on this very long flight?

I'm leaving on Tuesday from Sarasota, FL to Phuket, Thailand. The total time including layovers is 31 hours. I'm obviously a guy and I don't know what to wear, this is my first long haul international flight. I was thinking PJs but my girlfriend said no. Jeans and a shirt I think would get uncomfortable. What do you suggest? And are flip flops a good choice for a flight this long? Thanks.

  1. Loose fitting clothes are more comfortable, probably cotton, with an additional layer in case you are a bit chilly when you go to sleep.  Flip flops would be fine, if you are happy to walk about for long periods without them rubbing in between the toes.  trainers or sandals might be more comfortable.  And take a spare tee shirt and pants in case of accidents, and wet-wipes to freshen up.

  2. Find out what the weather will be in Phuket, and dress with that in mind.  But think comfortable, and dress in layers because every plane I've been on lately has been freezing.  But it can also be hot if you have to wait a while on the plane before takeoff.  So if you dress in layers, you can remove your outer garment when necessary.  Take chewing gum so you can keep your mouth moistened and fresh.  That helps.  Also a nice aftershave if you can get it on the plane to freshen up periodically.  I would also take a neckroll.  If you don't have one, you can get one at any airport.  They're great for long trips.  Good luck.

  3. Do not wear pyjamas or sweatpants, for a litany of reasons (unless you're under the age of 12).

Get a pair of loose fitting cotton and/or linen pants, and wear those.  You'll be more than comfortable.

Wear regular shoes.  Do NOT wear flip flops.  You can slip them off once you're seated (just wear socks please).

Since this sounds like your first trip to Thailand, one small hint-

Thailand is a beautiful country with wonderful and amazing people, but has very strict laws and they enforce them without exception.  You will have a great time.

  4. wear something comfortable. wear slip on shoes, or comfortable flip flops. pj's are awesome, but i understand her point of view.

  5. I agree with nixing the PJs unless you want to be singled out by every single security person.

Jeans can prove a bit hot for extended travel, I recommend a loose, lighter all-cotton pant like dockers.  As far as the flip flops go, the AC on the plane might leave you chilled at times.  Try to wear an easy slip-on if you have them, and cotton socks.  Your feet will swell on a long flight and you'd be smart to remove your shoes after takeoff.  That way if you want to get up and walk, you won't have your bare feet in contact with all the pee dribbles in the lavatory.
