I will be traveling to Europe this fall. I will be going to Geneva, Switzerland; Rome, Florence, Cinque Terre, Venice, Italy; and Munich. What should I wear while walking the beaches in Cinque Terre and while touring the big cities in Italy? And what should I wear to Oktoberfest in Munich? I don't wear hiking boots. I'm a Southern Californian who lives in jeans and flip flops but want to look appropriate and be comfortable while doing all the tourist activities. Thanks!

  1. Hey,this  is europe with a very diverse climate?,In rome expect 25-30c,in munich and geneva (anything between 15-25c),as you can already guess, I would pack for summer and winter!!  Enjoy!

  2. I would take jeans, as most people in Europe wear them, and tourists, (also those from within Europe,) will most likely wear them.

T-shirts or nice tops are great, a shirt with long sleeves a good thing to take and also bring a sweater or buy one in Europe when you start feeling the cold. (Great souvenir item.)

A rainproof light jacket is often needed, fall in Europe can be wet, but so can any time of the year.

For beach wear, bring what you would wear at home.

For shoes, flip flops are OK for part of the time do bring them for a change and for indoor use, but if you have trainers or runners or whatever you call your shoes for outdoor sports, bring them.

You will walk all day, every day for a big part of your trip in weather that is colder than you are used to.

Ballet slippers will leave your feet hurting, better stick to flip flops if you are used to those.

Or buy a pair of sport shoes when in Europe and you feel the need.

I do not know if that Christian has ever been in Europe.

I see people in jeans all over, all social classes and everybody under 60, many over 60 too by the way.

Yes, when going to a club the young people often dress up, but daily live and tourist activity, jeans and T-shirts.

  3. nothing american!

  4. If you want to blend in, don't wear jeans... if you are a teen, it would be fine.

It can be very chilly (mid 50s) in the fall.  While walking on the beach, it's fine to wear whatever; bikinis, sundresses, a towel... some beaches allow nudity, but others don't.  Bring a wrap or a sundress just incase you feel chilly or too exposed.

While in cities feel free to wear slacks, skirts, dresses... most Europeans dress nicer than we Americans, don't wear shorts... or running shoes.

Now, you will be  a tourist and as that you will be gawking at buildings and taking pics, so while not sticking out may be desirable be comfortable!

At Oktoberfest, wear clothes that you don't care if they get dirty... most of the celebrants will be Americans... go with friends, and look out for each other.

If you are a guy... I'm assuming you are a girl...

don't wear shorts, or jeans... nice jeans in the evenings are ok... slacks and not runners...

    Have fun.

  5. I have traveled thru Europe and my best advice is to prepare for the unexpected. The heat will start to disappear in the fall, so t-shirts and light jackets will be sufficient. Jeans, khaki's, tennis shoes, maybe one nice pair of shoes should serve you well. Beachgoers will start to dwindle thru the fall, but they wear typical swimwear. In Munich you will be so drunk you won't care what you have on. HaHa!

    Have fun!
