Question:

What should a 17 year old claim on her paycheck for taxes?

My daughter is working 20-25 hours a week at $7.15/hour. What should she claim for having the taxes taken out? Also, can she file and expect anything back? How much can she make that I still claim her? This is all new to us. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  1. Seriously look at your child's total income.  If her investment income is $300 or less *and* the total wages for the year are $5150 or less, then she'd owe nothing and exempt is legal.

If owes more, she'd owe tax starting at 10%.

Snce she's 17, there is no income test to claim her for dependency--the test is that she can't have provided more than half of her own support.  This changes at 19.

  2. Whether she needs to file depends on total annual income, not the hourly wage rate.  If you claim her as a dependent on your return, she should put "single" and zero exemptions on her W-4.

  3. She should put single/Zero allowances on her W-4.  If she works all year, she will most likely have some tax liability - if she makes over $5450 she will owe tax.  If more is withheld than she owes, then she'll get the extra refunded to her.

Unless she provides over half of her own support, you can stilll claim her.

  4. Have her claim Zero. Then she can expect to get money back at the end of the year. That way she will have extra money  for her hard work.

Yes she will see money come back...You only pay when you claim higher numbers.  If you claim her on your taxes she cannot claim herself.
