  1. Stay in touch with those you left behind in any way you can...email, phone, chat, etc.

It can take 1-3 years to really feel like a place is home and you have made a major change.

Try seeing the sites that are there, first, to have conversational material.  Read up on the city, I'm sure you can pick up a book anywhere on it.

Don't be afraid to try new things: cuisine, types of friends, hobbies.  Keep yourself occupied and it will feel like home.  Keep things that you love in your life, too.  Listen to your favorite music, if you are stressed, don't try to "fit in" too hard, though, harder to make true friends that way.

Stay safe.  I'm sure the crime rate is much higher there, so always take safety precautions against crime.

If you attended a church or club in your old town, find a chapter where you are and attend, to meet like-minded people.

Most of all, do all you can to stay de-stressed -- exercise, eat well, use relaxation techniques as necessary.

Good luck in NY.  Oh, one more thing!  Find a place to volunteer...help is needed  no matter where you are, and you will feel like a part of something bigger.

    Take care.
