1. She should know a few word combinations and identify things she wants. At two if she know some letters than she is being forced taught and that is no good. Give this baby a chance to be a baby. I have never introduced letters or numbers to my children before the age to three and a half. If your child is articulate and you continue to imitate animal sounds she will remember them. However a two year old is not going to know what to do with a letter. They are not going to know or comprehend the use or sound of that letter. If she knows a few colors that is great. Grass is green, sky is blue, ext. Some older twos don't have a big vocabulary yet. That is OK too. They will develop it when they are ready. If they know two or three word combinations that child is ahead of the pack. I understand the need for education in this country, however we need to comprehend ourselves the emotional needs of children. If a child knows all the numbers and letters at the age of three, and has no self-esteem, and another child know the very basics and has self-esteem which child is going to succeed? Where did our children's childhood go? We wonder why they get depressed. Let them be them for a change.

  2. I've worked in a preschool for almost 5 years and I'm going to tell you right now ... don't force ANYTHING on your child. When you cram way too much information into the child's head you are creating what is a called a "hurried child" where you drill your child about everything so they know more but at the same time you don't let them enjoy their childhood.

In my classroom the children learn through play. Through this the children can gain concepts such as numbers and quantity, letters and letter sounds, science (looking at the ants move on the ground, water play, etc), reading books, and anything involving the art (dramatic play, fingerplays, painting, and building).

But we DO NOT throw worksheets at the children and say they need to learn how to write all the letters and numbers. That is not natural for a three year old.

A three year old girl should be developing relationships and bonds socially with peers her own age (whether it's in daycare, play dates, etc). She should be learning how to communicate effectively with others to let her needs and wants be known. She should be basically learning through play because at three years old nothing more is relevent to them. Play is meaningful for every child and teachable moments happen through play not direct instruction. You're not raising a mini adult ... you are guiding your child through the first things in life.

I am a mother of a 3 1/2 year old. She has toys that are developmentally appropriate for her age, she listens to a lot of music, and because I have a profound interest in culture and languages she has picked up some spanish, french, polish, and japanese from when I speak those languages. I don't push anything with my daughter. I observe her play and if I see something she is really into then I'll take her lead and follow up with something of that interest.

You have to remember children should not be developing at the same exact rate. Each child is different in their own special way. There are standards and benchmarks that guide adults into what a 3 year old is capable of doing but we can't assume EVERY child is supposed to do this or something is wrong. These guidelines help us in identifying a possible delay but again ... they are guidelines. Only you know your child. You are your child's first teacher.

  3. This is such an easy answer. It depends on the child. Some children are more physical, or have more imagination, or have better memorization skills. If you want to enhance a particular area, it is up to you-BUT-make it fun!

If you want your child to learn colors, numbers, etc., use books! "My Little Sister Ate One Hare" by Paul Grossman is a fantastic book for numbers.

Read to your child. Read to your child. Read to your child.

DO NOT use a computer to teach. Use it to enhance.

  4. There's not a set rule as to what they should know at that age. It would be reasonable for her to know common animal sounds and maybe a few colors. I've taught my kids colors by always asking them which color of cup they want and say two colors, like "red or blue", or two color choices of shirts or whatever. As far as more concrete things like letters, numbers, and shapes go, just point them out as you go through your day and she'll start to pick them up. I agree with the other person though, don't force them at that age, just teach through everyday life and play.

  5. Well I learned how to read and type at the age of 3. Maybe you teach her how to read or type on the computer.

  6. Three year olds vary so much it's not so easy to pin down exactly what she should know. There are many guidelines that show the average knowledge though. Here is a list from Minnesota's Early Childhood Intervention System.....

At 3 Years I Can.....Be toilet trained, usually dry at night. talk & usually be understood. Use 3 word sentences. Pedal a bike. Kick a ball. Copy drawing a straight line. Name 6 body parts. Play briefly with other children. Sometimes express feelings with words. Think about feelings of others. Use imagination to create stories and play activities. Shift emotions quickly as I learn to handle emotions. Pay attention longer.

  7. She should be taught how to speak in simple sentences and the alphabet and the numbers and colors. Animal sounds too. Start teaching her how to read and write the alphabet and her name.

  8. When i was 3 i had math class and i did big numbers of addition n subratcion. And i did some english like prounoncing words vowels and learning how to spell words correctly and i knew all my colours when i was 2 so i think u should have some more work on the colours. But the most important is the math.
