  1. A box of donuts...

  2. I can drive only general advice, because every chief is different.

At my department, the Chief's interview is the very last step in the process. He already has your resume, has seen your interview and possibly already sat in your oral board.

You just need to bring yourself and impress him. Our Chief is fairly laid back as far as the questions and answers go, but he was former Marine and Highway Patrol for years. So if you show up with shoes that look like glass and a smartly pressed shirt and tie...You go along way to winning him over in the first 2 seconds.

So dress nicely, be ready to ask and answer questions like "Why do you want to work for XXXX PD" or "Tell me about yourself".

As someone else said, if you want to bring a brief case with a couple copies of your resume, a pen, a notepad ect, that is acceptable. Just don't show up with a lot of loose papers and such.

Also ask your background investigator. They may give you a few pointers.

  3. Have your resume available. You can have a pen and paper available but do not bring them out unless needed. A briefcase or pack is OK to bring the stuff in.

Dress nice, use good English with no slang, be clean, that includes your nails.

Be ready to answer questions and make pertinent comments when appropriate. Try to think before answering but not to long. Try not to go on and on, answer the question and stop. If you have a question be sure to ask.

Be yourself and try to relax before going into the interview. Try not to sit stiffly, if you normally use your hands while talking do so, it shows trustworthiness, if natural.  Be scrupulously honest with your answers.

    Good luck
