What should be the age regulations regarding aqua nappies?

Up to what age do you think ALL children should have to wear aqua nappies in swimming pools regardless of whether or not they are toilet trained?

In most pools in the U.K. from my experience this age is 3 but in a minority of pools it is 4.

At one poole I even found this rule:

"ALL children attending an adult and child lesson must wear a swim nappy."

Which seems reasonable until you realise there is an adult and child lesson for 4-6 year olds who are non swimmers!

Obviously at all pools anyone who isn't toilet trained must wear an aqua nappy anyway but I am asking about the rules which applies to everyone.

What is the rule near you and what do you think about it?

  1. i've been swimming regularly since i was a baby.  in all of nearly thirty years i've never seen a problem with a baby messing up a pool - and it's only in the last ten years or so that babies have been required to wear nappies in the pool.

that's not to say i think it's a bad idea that babies should have to wear nappies, but most kids over the age of two are sufficiently in control of themselves that it's not necessary.

on a related note, some pools are quite ridiculous about their adult:child ratios; my local pool says that there must be 1 adult to 2 children over 8 but that under-8's must be one-on-one with adults.  the reason i find this ridiculous is that since i was about seven i have been a better swimmer than my mother, so it made no difference in terms of my safety if all of her attention was focused on my little sister.  again, back then this was deemed acceptable, and she was allowed to take both of us swimming herself, but now it would be impossible - they won't even allow two adults to take two under eights and one older child in the pool.  there's a distinct lack of common sense over what is appropriate for individual children, especially at an age where ability levels can be so diverse.

  2. I think most pools around here have it anyone who isn't potty trained must wear one. At 4-6, wearing a diaper is probably a little embarrassing for them. How many 6 year olds regularly wear one?

  3. The rule at our community pool here in Missouri (U.S) is that if you wear a diaper you must wear a swim diaper. The rule where you live is a little ridiculous,  most 6 year olds shouldn't have to wear diapers.... I think are rule is simple and sanitary.
