What should be the main goal of the American Government?

In this modern age, what should our government be spending our time and money on to ensure a not so grim future.

National security, and I agree national debt.

National security, that's it!  If that's all they worried about instead of trying to keep everyone on their teet than there would be no national debt!

Getting rid of the national debt would be a good goal. There are many of ways (e.g. occupy less countries (we're currently occupying 130)) to do this. Getting rid of the debt would really help America.
