From a mathmatical point of view there are only a couple of things they can do.  Either increase the efficiency of a current system which will give you more work for the same energy or, figure out how to do the same job with less energy, perhaps by producing at a lower rate of throughput.

Did you know that a diesel engine last three times longer than a gasoline engine and burns 25%  less fuel? The VW Jetta diesel gets 42 mpg. The Toyota Corolla 30.

Wonder why all cars and trucks aren't powered by diesel engines?

That's what engineers could focus on.

Most engineers are always looking to save on energy because such savings are in the interest of the company that they work for.

While engineers have a lot of knowledge, and for many, especially those with experience, as opposed to the "college kids" just out of school, they know best what can be done to save on energy for the best good of everyone. The problem is that what they propose may cost money, and the company leadership, or share holders may not want to spend that money. Another point to consider is what are people, such as the one who asked this question doing to save energy? Based on experience, not a lot is being done that really amounts to any worthwhile savings.

Superconductors!  A huge amount of energy is lost through power lines bringing energy from the production facility to the user.  If we could transmit power with minimal loss, the whole country could be supplied with power from a solar array in the southwest.
