Question:

What should go in my bag?

I am a fourteen year old avid golfer that played on the high school team last season, and i am just getting serious about my game. Since my game is improving at a fast pace, my parents agreed to get me a whole new set of clubs. However, i am not sure what clubs i should put into my bag (i just don't know the lofts). Any help would be appreciated.

IN MY BAG NOW

10.5 Driver

15 3 wood

17 hybrid

21 three iron

24 four iron

27 five iron

31 six iron

35 seven iron

39 eight iron

43 nine iron

48 PW

52 GW

60 LW

For my new clubs i can't decide whether i should take out the 2 iron hybrid and three iron adding a 5 wood and a three iron- wood. Or put in a 3 iron hybrid, eliminate the three iron and add a SW to my bag. Will having a 5 wood and a 3 iron hybrid be dumb because i will almost be able to hit them the same distance? OR will an extra wedge create too many distance gaps in my low irons. PLEASE HELP ME MAKE THIS DECESION.

  1. If you have trouble hitting a 3 iron, then replace it with a hybrid.  Keep the 2 iron hybrid because there is no difference b/w that and the 5 wood  You need a sand wedge in your bag.  I would lose the gap wedge and learn to hit a variety of shots with your pitching and sand wedges(half and three quarter shots).  That will make up for the gap in distance between the 2 wedges.

  2. Ok DONT lose the 60* wedge.  This can be your most versatile club in your bag.  Do not listen to that guy.  When you are starting to get avid about the game, meaning at your age that you want to play well for your highschool tourny's and maybe play on a collegiate team, the biggest skill you need to master is your short game, and the 60* wedge can be your greatest weapon.  As your get older, the players will get better, and the courses will get tougher.  You need a 60* wedge.

    As for your question,

What I would personally do is ditch the 3 iron, add a 21* hybrid, probably the Nickent, and also ditch the 17* hybrid, and add a 5 wood.  This would give you:

    10.5* Driver

    15* 3 Wood

    18* 5 wood

    21* 3 hybrid

    24* 4 iron ( I would probably have this bent to 23*)

    and so on.

Also, just a suggestion, but you might bend your pw to 50* and get a 54* wedge instead of a 52*.  This will close any gaps you may have between 70-150 yards depending on how far you hit everything.

    Hope this helps,

  3. The 3 hybrid and 5 wood will go similar distances.  If I was purchasing new clubs today I would go with a 58 or 59 degree and a 53 degree for the higher lofted clubs.  Go with as low lofted of an iron as you can hit well and then go to hybrids. If that leaves you without distance gaps you could then use a 52,56 and 60 degree. The hybrid is easier to hit than the 3 iron but also has a higher ball flight which may be good or bad.  It also is less workable than the iron. I currently play the same clubs as you but without the 17 degree and I have a 56 degree.

  4. I was in the same dilemna when i re-did my bag.  I would recommend you drop either the 3i or 2i(hybrid 5w) and put a sand wedge in.  All of your scoring comes from your short game, and having that extra tool will benefit your short game greatly.

I personally dropped my 3i becuase i can manipulate a shot (high fade) with my 2i(hybrid 5w) to go the same distance as my 3i.

  5. Always add the extra wedge if you can.   I'd also replace your hybrid, 3 and 4 iron with a 5 wood (19 degree)and a 22 degree hybrid. This frees up a spot in your bag.

    I carry a 10.5 driver, a 2 (13 degree), 4 wood (17 degree) and a 4 iron (or 25+ degree hybrid, if you like).

This allows me to carry 4 wedges.  The difference between a 3 and a 4 iron is an extra 10 yards in run, NOT carry.  If you can't carry the ball at least 10 yards farther, retire the long iron. The more wedges, the better.  You will score better carrying a 60 degree and 64 degree.

  6. LOSE the 60LW .....unless your a TOUR player ....I doubt you're using this thing much , or when you do you mostly skull it .....LOSE the 60 degree wedge , your not tiger ~!

  7. I don't know a whole lot about golf, but I would have to recommend a putter in that bag too. I would do the 3 iron hybrid and SW combo though, probably my two favorite clubs.

  8. your balls

  9. I'd get a putter in the bag quick, otherwise it will be difficult putting with that 60*...
