When you give graduation money what do you expect it should be used for?

I think graduation money should be used for the advancement of the graduate's future, preferably to further their education, training, or career development.  When people give high school graduates money for graduation they are not only showing their support, they are also showing that they have enough confidence in that person to invest in them financially.  With this as an understanding, the graduate, in turn, uses that money for education or career enhancement in effort to fulfill that investment.

If you gave it with the immediate request that it be used in a particular way, then it would be nice if it would at least mostly be used in that way. If it was given simply as a gift, then I think it is up to the grad how they choose to use it.

I don't think it's appropriate to voice your expectations at a later time, in a tone of disappointment. It's not likely they're psychic and knew what you would have liked for them to have done with the money.
