What should i be looking for in a domain address?

I am starting a course in web design in october i thought about buying a domain address now to get started and design a web page with links e.t.c so when i start my course it shouldnt be that difficult. The course is with the Open universty UK online, is this cheating?

its not cheating. its starting from a better position. Domain addresses are hard to find if you want a good one (they are all taken), but if you just want one to set up a practise site, there would be no problem. Hosting costs are another thing. you can get free one, but they are rubbish. pay a bit more and get a proper solution. you may even get a free domain name with it.

Some ISPs allow you free space like 50 or 55 Mbs to build a website and show you how to do it. In your case it would be a great way for experimentation to try new ideas or put into practice what you learn as you go along.

And no it's not cheating because you are using the tools available to you help you in your course work. Very sensible of you I think being prepared for what will be a very hard slog!

No it isn't cheating. It's course preparation. :)

* If you're just starting out with a web-site, I would recommend you start small with the smallest size available. You can always upgrade later if you require more space.

It's never cheating if you are learning and learning ahead of time.

As for a domain name, there are lots of tips out there here is a site that goes though a list of tip for getting a domain name.

But if you don't want to get a domain and hosting you can just try to do something locally like using something like Xampp. Which will let you build html, php and even mysql pages.

Or you can try some free web hosting like http://freewebs.com which will let you get your hands dirty with html and layouts.
