  1. Of course, the exact location of where you will be in the US will help you determine what types of clothing to bring. No matter what, bring at least a few items of clothing for extremely hot and cold weather-- temperatures fluctuate during the day and night in a lot of the country.

In any case, there are a few things every student should bring.  Take a look here for a list:

    Best of luck!

  2. If you already know where you're going try to figure out how hot the summers are and how cold the winters are. If you are going to a state where the winters are cold you will need a warm jacket, but you may want to buy one once you get there so that you have more room to pack other things. Also, don't pack too many clothes. Though you may think you need to bring everything you own, don't. When you start packing for your return trip you'll have way to many clothes. So bring half as much as you think you'll need. You'll definately end up buying clothes in the states.

Don't bring too many personal items such as shampoo, soap, toothpaste, because you can buy all that stuff once you get to the states. If you pack multiple things of shampoo it'll take up lots of room and will be heavy.

Have some sort of credit card or debit card. When I was an exchange student in Ireland I had a visa check card and used it to withdraw money from the bank and to charge items. It was very useful and my parents were able to load money onto it whenever they saw it was getting low.

Try bringing gifts to share with your host family as a way to both thank them and show them something about your culture and country. Some books about your country or city would be a great gift, along with items made locally in your city. Also, if you bring extra presents to keep until Christmas, you can give your friends and family unique Christmas presents as well.

I hope this helps and I hope you have a wonderful time in the U.S!
