so i got my 1st hamster recently and i know you should clean the cage once a week, ive been taking out the bedding in the corner out daily (he pees in this one corner all the time) and replacing it with clean bedding i use carefesh anyway the week is almost up and i still cant decide what to use to clean cage, i read you can use 10% bleach plus water or white vinegar and water, or use antibacterial soap (where do u get this?) or just simply going to pet store and getting a disinfectant cleaner...i just want something that is safe and will clean well the cage, what do you recommend?

  1. Hamsters chew so don't use bleach. The best things to use are either:

White wine vinegar (diluted with water)

Or just something like "Clean and Fresh" from the pet store (specifically designed for cleaning cages etc.)

Good luck with your hammy :-)

  2. put all the thins in the cage out first then you grab a towel then just add some water and clean all the dirty parts of the cage. also remember to get all the p**p that you see because some hamsters eat their own p**p which makes them sick or sometimes die. then also clean the edges. then thats it

  3. Well, i think you should go to petsmart store and ask them what you can use to clean it out because my mom bought something in a bottle that you clean rodents cage out with but idk what its called.

  4. Bleach should not be used on plastic cages since they can react with  plastic. The best cleaning agent is to use vinegar in water to remove the stains and then use soapy solution (any dish / fabric / mildly antiseptic soap should do) and then rinsing completely in warm water to remove any traces of vinegar or soap.

Also it is preferable to sun dry the cage for a couple of hours to sterilise it completely as just wiping it dry with a cloth might not kill all bacteria in it.

Normally cleaning the cage once a week is fine if you are using good bedding like carefresh since it absorbs the smell of urine and is very comfortable for the hamsters. This cleaning must be an elaborate cleaning including washing the whole cage and all components like tunnels, food dishes, water bottles, wheels etc with soapy water and a mild disinfectant and drying them thoroughly before laying out fresh bedding and putting the hamster back in.

If you feel that the bedding is getting dirty faster, change the bedding twice a week and the major cage cleaning once a week. Also the food dish and water bottle should be cleaned every second day before refilling with fresh food and water.

  5. Ggo to Petsmart and get this spray called Super Pet Clean Cage Deodrizer. I use it for my hammie's cage. It gets the potty stains out, and reduces the smell.

  6. the best is pure water but white vinegar and water mix is not a bad choice either...and carefresh is a very good hamster bedding...seems like you have done your hamster homework...lol

  7. just use hot water thats what i use just plain hot water

  8. take all soiled beggin out.

scrub bedding area with hot water

    put down fresh bedding

not sure about dis infectent but i never used it and i had one guinea pig for 6 years

  9. I bought 'Clean Cage' safe disenfectant from Petsmart. It's non-toxic and it smells like fresh fruit! All you have to do is sray a bit and wipe it off.

  10. remove all the sawdust get a spray bottle and put a small amount of bleech in the bottom or washing up iquid or ad that in it aswella and dilute it but make sure it is very diluted you should clean them out 1 every 2 weeks
