  1. They do need to be covered at night so they understand when they are supposed to sleep.

You would be better off buying a proper cage cover as it would be safe and would do the job effectively.

  2. Are you using the blanket at night to signal to the parakeets that they should sleep or are you using it in the morning to try to keep them calm?

If it's at night, just leave the blanket on; if it is cotton, it should be ok for the parakeets if ingested in small quantities, though birds tend to shred non-food materials, not eat them. Sooner or later your birds will learn that it is time to sleep, not shred.

If it's in the morning, your birds may be too hyper/curious about their surroundings and the noise that comes with it, especially since they are new. Just keep the blanket off and let them get used to the flow of your household and after a while, they might not be as destructive.

    Hope this helps; good luck!

  3. Use a cover that doesn't have a lot of fuzz on it.  A fuzzy blanket not only could be nibbled on, but also toenails could get caught in it when the birds climb on the cage bars.

  4. Its normal to bite it.

    However, it is too thick.

I put my dad's old shirt over it. :]
