We had a very bad hail storm last week, I took my car in yesterday to see how much damage i had , turns out that i have $6,335.59 in damage. The guy at the body shop said i was 800.00 shy of them totaling my car.

Now my Husband wants to find a way to pocket the money and drive my car till it falls apart ,I want to get my car fixed... What should I do ?

By the way we still owe about $5,000.00 on my car...

  1. first off what about insurance money? or is the money you have it.

and your husbands a r****d even for suggesting that. its not safe. just drive it intill it falls apart

  2. well if your going to be buying a car when that one falls apart your going to be screwed because the car you buy will have to be at least worth triple what you owe on the one you have now....so either way you look at it the money will be spent one way or the other. I say fix it!!!! You don't want a huge car payment ...............and who wants to drive a clunker?..lol

  3. If its still driveable I say don't repair it. Unless everyone else covered their own cars (and protected them from the storm) then you won't be the only one on the road like that.

  4. it it's your car, the check will be in your name,. so do what you want

  5. Throw 500 golf balls at him hard as you can and see if he wants to go to the doctor or not.One other thing you can do is get a few more estimaates maybe some one will total it. All you have to is submit one estimate to the insurance company.

  6. Either way, your insurance is going to go up when you make the claim. If you pocket the money, the insurance company won't care unless you make another claim on the car. More than likely, the insurance company will send out an adjuster to do an estimate and figure in paintless dent removal. This will be about half the cost of the body shop. If the insurance company cuts YOU the check, you still don't have to fix it. But again, they won't pay twice for a damaged panel. If you pocket the money, I'd pay on the car as much as possible and pray I didn't get in an accident.

  7. You don't say how old the car is to start with, but given the fact that if you keep the car, you still owe $5,000.

Generally speaking, the car can be restored to the condition it was before the hail.  If you like the car and it gets reasonably good mileage, the motor is strong, and no problems with the transmission, I'd go for it.

All this is contingent on the amount of mileage on the car, so that must be considered in your decision.  100,000 miles is not too many miles to have and still have a pretty serviceable vehicle for several years.

  8. This sounds like a question for my favorite girl Suze Orman! But since I watch her show every week, I could guess what she would say...

Girlfriend, or Boyfriend! You never said how much the car cost initially. A 100 grand car is definitley worth fixing. If you owe 5 grand on it I am assuming it was at least more than 10 grand?

When you say pocket the money I am assuming that it is insurance money you are speaking about. If you get let's say 6 grand in insurance to fix the car, do just that...FIX THE CAR! Unless you plan on buying another car for 5 grandish which would probably be a piece of c**p. Why are you going to drive this car til it konks out which will be sooner than you think and then have NOTHING TO DRIVE! Tell your husband you are fixing the car and that's that. If he wants 6 grand to spend frivously tell him he's out of luck, it's your car!! I don't car who paid for it, you said it's YOUR car! Your car, your decision.

  9. If you have your car financed, you are required to repair the car. Your finance contract requires you to keep your car in good shape if its collateral in a loan. If you have comprehensive insurance, you can pay off the loan an pocket extra money.
