  1. is your guitar in tune right now? if it is in standard tuning just put your finger on the 7th fret top string and tune the top string down until it matches the note of the second string played open (no fret). now just lay your finger across the top 3 strings on any fret and you have a power chord. good luck

    EDIT:

Zac, did you read which type of music he is playing?

This is known as drop-d tuning and is used in the metal genre quite frequently.

I doubt that an open G chord or the scales will be of any use for a beginner playing metal.

Trust me dude, I know what i am talking about.

  2. It will take a while to get good at switching chords fast and smooth.  The only way to do that is practice, practice and more practice.  You need to develop muscle memory so that all you have to do is think "G chord" or whatever, and your fingers automatically know exactly where to go without you having to think about it.

Get a good teacher, who can watch and listen to you play and coach you into using your hands correctly so you don't develop bad habits that will hold you back later in your playing.  A good teacher will know what scales you need to learn and make sure you learn them, teach you theory so you know when and how to use them for improvisational soloing, and make sure your rhythm and timing are steady and solid.

Teaching yourself is a hit-or-miss proposition to say the least.

  3. okay idk what the reply above me was even about lol okay well you need to know your chords thats the first step to playing guitar. Like i have said on a lot of my answers on guitar playing. a couple thinsg are escential. Learn your scales lol start off with a G major scale and a g penatonic minor scale Once you master these scales you shift the root note of the scale which is g to a different root note lets say c once you doe this you shift the patterns accordig to the root note once you know the Gmajor and minor scales you know all the majjor and minor scales because its all just a shift of patterns you have to practice memorizing what patterns go where lol okay and as for chords you need to practice switching your chords smooth transitions are in every song you hear so you need to do it. Once you know scales and chords you can figure out keys. Every key has a variety of notes and you can play once you recognize which chords are in which key you can use the same key scale. Such as lol lets say your friends are jamming playing G chord then a C then a B you say omg those chords are in the kety of GGGG! then you say omg i know the G major scale and you can solo with them and sound great. Once you know this experiment with the scales find cool licks and use these licks in your soling once you undersatand what your playing you should practice songs and you will be able to play your metals bands and one more pointer always learn whole songs never leave trhem unfinished Good Luck Hoep this helps
