I want to make my own cage for my hopefully-soon-to-be guinea pig, but there are really only two places in my house were a large cage would fit. i'm only getting one guinea pig ((yes i know you should get two, but i'm going to spend TONS of time with it)). one place where it could fit is a spot that is 24" by about 37" and the other space is 15" wide but can extend to about 40" to 50" long. what should i do!? i was thinking about making it double leveled, but it must have a cover to keep out my cats and my little brother. where should i put it and should i make it double leveled to offer more space?

  1. It should have a roof so you wont need to put a cover over it!!!!! Make sure u have 2 doors.... One for sleeping where hardly no lightcan get in. And one the metal mesh squares for food eating place! Make sure it is well made so they cant escape. It would be best if you bought a run for the guinea pig to run around on the grass outside in the summer so they don't get bored and hot inside!! It wont smell either if you have it situate outside. Just make sure it is very sturdy and wont be able to allow the guinea pig to escape. If you put it outside it will have to have a felted roof ( not the material but the waterproof stuff used on sheds e.t.c)

You may find it easier to buy and nice one from a pet shop. I have 4 guinea pigs. They live in two seperate hutches stacked on top of each other. My dad is a D.T teacher so he was able to make my hutches and runs. You will aso need to make sure the hutch is on legs . This will allow the floor to air and not go mouldy. It's necessary to have the hutch on legs to stop animals e.t.c getting to the guinea pig. Also to prevent damp too.

    Good Luck

  2. Guinea pigs like to race around their cages. I have 4, if you can fit it in, make it the biggest size you can. However, if you've only got one guinea pig it won't need to be as big as mine.

Double levelled cages are a good idea, it gives guineas more space to run around, if you have ramps in there between floors make sure they're not too steep and that they're made out of solid material (natural wood is good, make sure there are no splinters) and not the wire frame you see a lot of cages made of which can hurt their legs..

If your little brother or your cat might disturb it make sure it has a secure roof. My cats sit on top of my cages but can't get in. I just make sure the doors are clipped shut.

  3. everything previous have said and if it's double levaled you can shut it of in the top and clean the bottom and opositte

  4. Well, I had two female gunea pigs when I was little, and they do get lonesome for another.  When one died, the other only lived for a couple weeks after that and was morbidly depressed.

But when things were good, they had a 5X3 cage with cedar shavings in it, 2 wooden boxes that they played in and sharpened their teeth on.

The cage was chicken wire and wood and opened from the top.

They had two food dishes (we used custard cups) and a water spout that hung in the corner.

The boxes were important because they played a hiding game, where one would hide in a box and jump out and scare the other one when she came around.  The surprised one would then squeal and run to her own box until the other came looking....

  5. build a little wooden shelter thing by it

  6. RULE OF THUMB, THE BIGGER THE HABITAT, THE HAPPIER THE ANIMAL

  7. go to a pet store and buy a cheap one or if you do not have that much money find a tub around the house and shread some newsapaper and spread it all around the tub and give some veggies to it oh yeah and give it a little warm bath to use hand soap size of a quarter

  8. i know you say your going to spend loads of time withit, but it's not the same as having the company of one of it's own. Guinea pigs are extremely social animals and have been known to even die when they don't have a companion, especially females. i really hope you reconsider. As far as the cage goes, the bigger the better and double leveled can make the cage a bit more interesting for the animal.
