  1. Build a machine that can give a good prostate massage and then get yourself a private room for the week of your dreams.

  2. Have grandson in third year at Texas Tech studing to be mechanical engineer  and he wants to work for my friend who has a barge repair terminal. Says he wants hands on experience

  3. Choose any topic in Computational Fluid Dynamics...its interesting!

  4. Change air pressure to hydraulic pressure and use the hydraulic to compress air and you should have perpetual motion acording to calculations.

  5. Take a block of phosphor bronze or gunmetal, and machine four mutually perpendicular holes in it. Then measure the exact angle of the holes using a profile projector, taking into account any dimensional warping.

  6. Design one of the following :

    * A mechanism for handling materials, crane, robot, etc.

    * An intricate "die" for casting/extrusion/forging/...etc

    * A cetrifugal pump, turbine, pipeline for some actual projects.

    * A multi process machin, that integrates the functions of lathe, drill, milling machine ..etc.

  7. For my senior project in Materials Engineering we designed and built a whole furnace from scratch, controls and all.  Was a great experience to model the heat flow and power usage and then actually build it and run it (and fire some clay objects in it).  Tought us about computer modeling, construction, power control and instrumentation.
