I'm almost positive my dwarf gourami has dropsy. what can i do to save him? will this eventually kill my other fish? (10 gallon community tank).

i think it started with my very first fish i had which was a gourami. then it spread to my black balloon mollie, then to my swordtail now to my new gourami.

should i take him out of the tank and freeze him? i really dont want to kill him but is it the best way so my other fish dont get dropsy?

i have a 5 gallon i can put him in if that will help him. please help!!

thanks

  1. Keep the fluorescent light on during the day and use stress coat + stress zyme at the same time to treat the dropsy. You may also put a little bit of aquarium salt. I stopped using aquarium salt since i bought stress coat, and add stress coat to cure or prevent disease. My fishes are very healthy and never had disease.

  2. Separate him from the other fish as it will spread to the others.

Do a 25% water change in main tank and clean/change filter.

Depending on how severe or what stage of dropsy it is...you can buy over the counter treatments for dropsy at wal-mart, pet shops etc.

Don't feed fish for about 24 hours.

Its not a garantee that the fish is not to far gone, but it is worth a try.

  3. I completely disagree with euthanasia because dropsy is a fungus & if your fish has it then it is present in the entire tank. It is that bad to treat. You can buy the remedey @ any fish store. Im personally fond of the fizzing tablets that are available @ walmart. Like I said euthanasia is bad & aful & odds are you will end up having to kill all your fish if you go with that other regime. Treat the tank as soon as possible first cuz you can always kill a fish but it takes skill & heart to nurture it to health. & killing I would think would be my LAST resort when all else failed.

  4. In reply to your question, yes, it will spread to your other fish. You need to euthanize it as soon as possible. Dropsy is nearly impossible to treat and spreads like wildfire. 90% of diseases in fish are directly related to water chemistry. Check your pH daily and try to invest in a good filtration system.
