What should i do if i get shocked by an electrical outlet?

i was cutting wallpaper around an outlet with a metal blade. i only felt a jolt in my arms.

  1. sounds like you cut through the insulation and hit a live conductor! whilst cutting plaster! Cables running to out let should be replaced? Where you wearing rubber soled shoes? Yes you should either turn off circuit breaker that supplies outlet or pull out fuse


  2. I would call an electrician.  You might have accidentally cut a wire, if there is no conduit to protect it.  

    **Unattended, this could lead to a fire.**

    Its also possible there is faulty ground, in which case you would need to isolate where the connection is broken, and repair.  Depending on the age and construction, this can be quite a challenge.  Still, call an electrician to be safe.

  3. Check for a loose or missing ground.

  4. I'd get a qualified electrician out to check your wiring. There is no way that you should be able to get a shock from around the outside of the switch, your wiring must be faulty. Dont use the switch till you get it checked out.
