  1. If you're a minor, you go to your parents about it.  They approach the school you attend (if public) and firmly request testing be done.  If you are not a minor, I suggest seeing your primary care physician and finding out what resources he can direct you too.  I am unaware of how testing is done outside of the public schools.

Many people are highly successful with dyslexia.  They work in all fields at all levels and earn pay from signficantly wealthy to nothing.  It depends on you.  It usually means working harder and longer at reading and writing, so discipline and motivation are necessary.  It can be rough to be sitting at home putting a lot of time and effort into your homework for decent grades, when your friends get better grades with half the effort and then go out to party.  But there are resources to make things a lot easier.  Don't think you have to go it alone.

    Public schools must provide accommodation.

Colleges usually have a student service center or something that will determine if you qualify to have someone take notes for you, get extra time on exams, etc.

Businesses must also provide accommodation for disability.

If your disability is severe enough and you are having trouble getting or holding a job, your state may provide a vocational rehabilitation service that will help you figure out the appropriate coping methods.

In all cases, you will need to have valid testing that proves you do have a learning disability.  Your doctor should at least know where to look to find this information.

I have probably somewhat intimidated you with this information, but it CAN be done.

  2. If you are still in school-you need to be evaluated by thechild study team

if you have graduated you can consult with an educational pyschologist
