okay so I'm a junior in high school and its going to be my second year playing JV. It's really frustrating for me because I want more then anything to be the captain of the team this year. The team has 18 girls on it, though and only 4 of them are juniors and the rest are freshman and sophomores. The way my coach does captains is by having everyone vote for the 2 girls they want as captains. I think this is not a good idea because basically all the girls just vote for their friends and because there are only 3 other girls in my grade on the team I know that I wont be voted as captain. I want it soo bad and I feel that because I'm probably the best player, I'm nice to everybody, I've played highschool for the last 3 years AND it's my second year on JV that i deserve it. Should i talk to my coach about how voting is unfair or what should i do??

  1. I know how you feel, my friend and I felt the same way.  At the very beginning of tryouts, we decided that we were going to become captains.  Even though we knew people might want to vote for their friends, we decided to prove to them that we were leaders.  We were also juniors playing on the JV team full of frosh/soph girls.

So, from the very beginning, we led everything.  We were always in front and led the team in our warm-up lap, and we also lef stretches.  I also went out of my way to welcome all the new girls onto the team, and tried to make friends with everyone, and didn't hang out with only my friends.

Our coach actually decided not to have an official captain for the team, but that season, I became the "unofficial" captain.  The coach put me in charge of many of the drills, and I was a captain in a lot of games.  So I think that just put in the extra effort to be a leader and try to make friends with everyone, so that even if the coach doesn't change his voting system, you'll have a good chance.  Also, if you know the coach really well, I'd have a word away from the team about how you feel.  Good luck!

  2. It appears that your coach is not very good with sports. Letting the players vote for the captain is something that can be done only after high school otherwise you are going to get the most popular person not the best player. I am afraid you are going to have to just accept that and try to realize that to be the REAL captain of the team has NOTHING to do with a vote on paper but rather a vote of confidence. Get out there, work hard in practice, never give up in a game and you will become the REAL captain. Being the leader on a team is not a 'C' on your jersey or letter jacket, its being respected and listened to on the field.

  3. Well, since you said that mainly they chose their best friends as a captain that is being unfair. Is not how popular you are with everyone but how good you are and what you contribute to the team. Meaning what you mean to the team, and how would it be without you..

  4. Players should never vote on captain.  It should be up to the coach.  Choosing captain should be based on seniority, skill, and dedication to the team.  Try talking to the coach and express your concerns.  It can't hurt.
