  1. When you're assigned to a ship, it won't matter what your rating is; you'll be assigned to a repair locker team and you'll be a firefighter whether you want to be one or not. There is no other higher danger to a ship at sea than fire. And, since there is no option for retreat from the fire, all that is left is a crew that has to save the ship or be VERY good swimmers.

  2. The DC Rate (Damage Controlman) are the Navy's firefighting experts.  Get a good ASVAB score and hope it's available when you see the classifier.

From a website.....  as a DC you are responsible for inspecting, maintainence, and repair of firefighting, flooding equipment and fire suppression systems. You will learn fire suppression systems like AFFF, HALON (or equivelant now), CO2 flooding, restaurant hood systems and so on. You will also be responsible for maintain firefighting and damage control equipment in the repair lockers, (each ship is different for the number of lockers) you also take care of SCBA's or even old style OBA's, chem warfare equipment and so forth.

You will be assigned a position on a fire party and will work your way up to a more leadership position on the party. You will find yourself doing a lot of teaching and instructing of firefighting techniques and training others on equipment. Even though DC is a fire suppression type of rate, you primary job is to ensure the rest of the crew is trained to handle a fire or flooding emergency and you will find yourself doing more incident management than firefighting.

  3. The score you should try out for, regardless of what training you want, is the best score you can possibly achieve! There are study guides for the ASVAB at bookstores like Barnes and Noble, but the ASVAB is a general knowledge and skills test, you will pretty much get what you get.

  4. If you want a description about the rate here it is:

Also if you want to know specifics head on over to http://www.mynavyonline.com Im KJC88 there, you can ask all the questions you want and trust our answers instead of here on Yahoo.

Also for the ASVAB you do need to do well in each section, the ASVAB score is good, but what matters are the line scores. Which is the number of correct you get per section. Say for DC you need 150 (im not saying that's what it is), that Means you need 150 correct answers added up from Math, General Science,Mechanics (etc) to qualify. Also hope it's open at the Navy Liaison at MEPS.

If not you can always go NUKE if you're smart or any ATF (advanced Technical Field). Anyways head on over to MyNavyOnline.

    Good luck Sailor!

  5. DCs are NOTHING like civilian fire fighters.  In fact the only branch that has anything vaguely resembling  that is the AF.  all other branches use civilians on their bases.

DC is also hard to get into, and deals mostly with keeping the ship afloat when bad things happen( like the Cole bombing or that stupid fire on the GW)
