What should i do to clear the error code p0171?

the check engine light on my avalon 2000 came on a month ago, i had it checked and i got this code p0171. sometimes the light comes off by itself and then come on back again... please help, thanks.

You check engine light will keep coming back on until you have the problem fixed. That code po171 means that your fuel trim system is lean at bank  1 which could mean that you have a bad fuel injector  or a bad 02 sensor on bank 1.If you new which 02 sensor it was you could change it out your self .not hard to do . you just unhook the battery then find the bad 02 sensor and unplug the wire's and s***w it out.

O2 sensor reading a Lean condition. Running 'lean'

Could mean many things, vacuum leak, low fuel pressure, etc.

Clearing the code before it has been repaired will be pointless, as the problem has not been resolved.

And running on a lean condition results in much, much higher engine operating temperature, not good - its already running hot enough....

p0171 system too lean, bank 1.

this means that you are not getting enough fuel to satisfy the requirements of the engine. you could have a bad o2 sensor giving you invalid information, a restricted injector not allowing enough fuel to get into the cylinder(s), or a number of other problems.

find out what that code means, there are books and scanners that can tell you that info, did you have the oil changed ? maybe the mechanic didnt reset the computer,   un hook the positive battery terminal for 5 minutes, then hook it back up, then turn the ignition switch on and off ( fully ) five times, this will reset the computer, if you still have a code showing up, you will have to ask the dealer what that code means
