  1. in high school do as many things that can make you stand out from everyone else

ex. go into school related contests and participate in things that the rewards are special and not everyone can get it

try to take as many hard classes as you can and do well in them

    dont slack off

  2. This may sound archaic, but work hard in your studies.  Be the best student you possibly can.

Also, get involved in high school.  Colleges aren't just looking for smart students, but they want active students--students who will contribute to the campus community.  Any leadership experience you can get in high school will definitely help you take advantage of the independence you experience as a college student.

If you're in 8th grade right now, that's okay.  Like I said, do your best in class.  If you want to put yourself in a good position for financial aid--specifically scholarships, you'll need a great GPA.

In high school, you're going to want to start researching scholarship opportunities: not just from colleges, but from private (or outside) sources.  Make friends with your Guidance/Career Counselor: this person should be a wealth of information.

As early as sophomore year, contact the Admissions Office of the colleges/universities you're looking at to get information about the application process and requirements.  Think of this as window shopping.

The summer after your Junior year (if not earlier) you'll want to spend some time visiting campuses: small ones, large ones, public, private.  Shopping for college is like shopping for shoes.  Find a few that fit, look great, and make you feel like a superstar: these will be the schools to apply to.

Senior year you'll need to dedicate your time to applying and those private scholarships--which is why I suggest doing your visits Junior year...

I hope this helps! Good job in starting early: having a plan is key!  You're going to be great; I just know it. :)

  3. ....what eveyone else said and DON'T FORGET TO ENJOY YOUR LIFE. You'll only be teen once in life time.

  4. Grades will be important definitely especially if the full-scholarship you had in mind is an academic scholarship.

However, not all scholarships are limited to academic scholarships. Some scholarships put emphasis in extra-curricular activities such as volunteer community service and leadership in organizations and/or the student body. Some scholarships may have some specific requirements such as being part of a particular organization for at least two years or so.

Other scholarhips are also given for students taking up a specific major. So it would be good to assess where your strengths are and think of the possible majors you want to be taking.
