  1. In the 400 spikes are good for about 2 seconds.

The way to improve your times is to run.

You will need to build a distance base by running about 3 miles 3 days each week.

Run intervals on the track 2 days each week, you can do different things from repeat 100s to repeat 800s changing the number of repeats, the time of the runs, and the rest periods as you get into better shape.

Talk to the coach at the club and see what he wants you to do.

You are not going to look like and idiot.

  2. You should not be worried about whether your good enough to join a club.  All clubs are always on the lookout for new members and will cater for athletes of all abilities.

As for your times, they are decent times and you have a good base to work from, but I would suggest you decide which area to concentrate on, sprints or endurance.

Joining a club will definitely improve your times as you will have specific, structured training and other people to train with.

As a quick response, I'd say to improve sprinting you should look to improve on technique, improving leg speed and increasig power and strength.

For 800m you would need to work more on building stamina, and having good speed endrance.  Hope this helps.
