  1. 50 years ago it was probably removed from the boat, and left on the floor of an unheated shed for the winter.  Like my father in law has always done with his 61 Johnson.

Still starts every spring (with new gas)

  2. Disconnecting the fuel line while motor is running can slowly damage rings and cylinder. Your lubricant is in the gas and as gas runs out you run very lean and while it is starved for fuel it is also starved for oil.

I used to use Stabil but have switched to SEA FOAM. It is a great all around product.

    Add fuel stabilizer to gas

hook hose to motor muffs and run motor to circulate treated fuel.

After removing carb shroud squirt fogging oil in carbs slowly till heavy smoke is being exhausted then flood motor with fogging oil till motor dies.

Pull spark plugs and squirt fogging oil in cylinder and replace plugs.

    Check lower unit for water

Disconnect fuel line and either fill tank full or empty it.

  3. Here are some winterizing tips for you

Hope it will help you a bit.

  4. Flush it with fresh water while its running on your boat or a stand, have Stabil in the fuel supply and let it run for 10 minutes to make sure the Stabil gets into the carbs. With the cover off run the engine and disconnect the fuel line. As its running shoot in fogging spray careful not to stall the engine. When it starts to die from no fuel hit the choke to try to keep it running and keep shooting the fogging spray until it dies. Pull the spark plugs and shoot some fogging spray in the cylinders. Keep the remote tank full with Stabil. Its a good idea to change the lower unit oil now, if the oil is milky its time for some seals in the lower unit. Put the engine in the down position to allow any water to drain out. Spray the engine with silicone spray for corrossion protection.

  5. add fuel stabilizer to FULL fuel tank and run it long enough to get stabilized fuel into the carb(s)

I use this article to winterize my boat, and never have a problem

  7. Disconnect the tank from the engine and run the engine until it out of fuel. Then get some fuel stabilizer additive for the fuel if you intend on letting it sit during the winter months.
