i just purchased some awesome 'subversive' embroidery patterns from "sublime stitching"... they are of vital organs (like the human heart, eyeballs, etc. there are even patterns for hypodermic needles and a uterus!), and i want to embroider something for my sister for a birthday gift. she is starting nursing school in the fall. i want to do something cool, but i can't think of any ideas. can anyone help me brainstorm?? i don't really want to do pillow-cases, napkins, or hankies. help! thank you!!! it has to be something cool, not "country home" or too old-fashioned. something hip. thanks again!

  1. How about a throw cushion for her bed or a T- shirt but you would need to use a stabilizer for the backing and then remove it when finished embroidering.  The back of a denim or cotton jacket would look awsome!

I was a nurse in the 60's and 70's and think this is a great idea. She is one lucky sister!

  2. You gave me the most wonderful idea when I read your question.  I too have a niece going into nursing school.  I think I'm going to embroider her a tote bag with some nursing symbols onto it or maybe some of the little stick nurses that I  have.  This might be a great idea as I know they have alot of books to carry and wouldn't that be great that they have their own personalized tote bag?  Happy stitching.

  3. How about a plain cotton bathrobe with a hood?  You could embroider the heart near where her heart would be, the uterus near where it should be, the eyeball on both side edges of the hood, etc.  Then, since the robe is so graphic, why not add a really cute ribbon, some lace, or something else shockingly girly to offset the anatomy designs?  Since your sister is getting ready to start nursing school, I think a robe like this would be fun for her to show to her classmates.  Also, the needle could be stitched either near the upper arm or on one side of the behind.  The more I think about it, the more I think this could be really cool.

  4. In the past, I have embroidered straight onto plain canvas tote bags. You can get them anywhere (Michaels, Joann, Walmart)- but I would stay away from the ones with plastic webbing for the handle (they're too short and not functional). You can even get a nice plain tote from American Apparel for around $12. Target may have cute, plain bags as well.

Embroidering on the tote itself is fairly easy, although you have to turn almost completely inside out to see the back for any reason. Just make sure you get your hoop secured directly in the center!

Good luck figuring something out, and have fun! Great choice on the Sublime Stitching patterns too!

  5. My favorite personalized gift is a bath sheet sized towel with name and a symbol on it.  Everyone uses them, they last years and think of you often...especially nice if they are going away to school. All of my children and grandchildren have them and treasure them.

  6. Put the Heart on it, and print the words>> Have a Heart! Nurse in training!

  7. How about an apron?  I went to outletshirts.com and got a Port Authority 500 bibbed apron for my son-in-law.  He grills a lot & I'm going to use "Kiss The Cook" with some other small appropriate designs on the bib.  Just a thought.  I hope you find something you like.

  8. how about the lid of a box -- like this:

or you can buy boxes that have space for an insert.

or maybe a set of coasters?  You used to be able to buy coasters at Mary Maxim that would take an inserted piece of cross-stitch -- also mugs that would do the same thing like this http://www.everythingcrossstitch.com/p-1...

  9. Hi ,

Somethings I have embroidered that were a hit are, aprons with nice sayings, a wall picture embroidery with or without a saying , teatowels, hoodies, and a set of towels for the bathroom a set of three with the same embroidery large, meduim, and small.  A spa wrap, with a beautiful embroidery of what the person likes like ex: humming birds for the lady and a nice old or new fastion car for the man they were a hit.  Large napkins or place mats real nice ones embroidery the corners and give them as center  peices for a table or on end tables in the bedroom or living room they look beautiful and they are hand made so wonderful gift. Christmas is comeing make beautiful lace ornaments for the Christmas tree.  Sorry just noticed the rest of you email with what you want to use and idea is doing the designs on a spa wrap they look great and another one would be on a nice large frame with all different placements for different size pictures and put all those heart , and uters and nurses and needles in each space it will look stunning.  The other one is a fleece throw for those cold nights on the couch with all those things on it and her name . I did one for my grandson he loves bugs and it looked great.

Hope you can use some of my ideas.

    take care

    Lucy

  10. I made stethoscope covers. A long tube with a snap or piece of velcro at the top and elastic at the bottom. I can just see,"I (picture of the heart) patients"  "Keep an (eye) on your health"

  11. Try  www.embroiderthis.com

They have lots of blank items to embroider. You should be able to find something that you like for your sister or get an idea of something to make to embroider.
