  1. Ohio Social Studies 7th Grade World History Textbook/

    PREFACE

This book represents the beginning of a multi-year project to create a digital textbook based on the Ohio 7th grade social studies content standards. The first two chapters were completed by two different classes and represent information concerning the Middle Ages, Feudalism, the Renaissance and the Protestant Reformation. Students chose different topics that correspond to specific concepts outlined in Ohio’s curriculum standards.

Students at Beachwood Middle School are creating this book. Beachwood City Schools are located in Beachwood, Ohio, a suburb of Cleveland. Beachwood Middle School incorporates technology in the classroom through a one-to-one laptop program. The information you read in this digital textbook is completely student-generated (excluding this introduction). Students spent several weeks brainstorming, review their notes and previous projects, and collaborating in small groups. It is because of their dedication and achievement as life-long learners that this project is possible. These students also had the courage to take a risk with their teachers and use the last few weeks of school to do something truly unique.

This textbook is the result of over a year of collaboration between several individuals. Garth Holman, the Social Studies department chair and 7th grade world history teacher envisioned this project as a way to engage students through the use of technology and help them see the “big picture” that is often lost, or ignored, in history classes. Beginning in the summer of 2006, Garth began working with a student teacher, Michael Pennington. Another member of this project was Angie White, an intervention specialist at Beachwood Middle School. Angie provided a strong knowledge of curriculum differentiation and techniques to include students of varying abilities. A project of this nature, allows students to disseminate knowledge in a digital format that is congruent to the world in which they live. Our students are digital natives and this new technological paradigm allows for the democratization of knowledge. Wiki technology and the ability to instantaneously communicate across cultures and physical boundaries means that nothing our students create is isolated. We not only want our students to learn, but understand how the puzzle pieces fit to create the world in which we live.

It all started with a basic question, “how do you engage students and allow them to show what they know”. Burgeoning technologies require teachers to rethink assessment and adapt to their students. Teachers prepare students for their future, not our past. Life does not occur in a vacuum, yet too often textbooks and curriculum categorize and isolate historical episodes. Our students connected the historical dots using written summaries, hyperlinks, digital imagery, and iMovie. The ultimate goal of this book is not only to explain important moments in history, but also understand the long-term effects of each moment.

  2. Concentrate!

    You need to concentrate!

Put all of your friends aside no matter how cool or awesome or nice they are. You need to get it together. If you came close to failing almost everything last year, that is bad! Get help with a school counselor and talk to him/her...

    thats all

  3. 7th grade is easy, just keep cool and look cool.

study for tests, keep up the good work

you might get a first crush  ;)

  4. stuf will only get harder trust me

  5. I'm going into 8th this year. Um..they just expect you to be more organized and responsible..

  6. I LOVED 7th grade. Don't worry about failing, just go and have a good time. Be yourself not one of these other freaks who feels the are sooo lame they have to go along with the crowd. this is your life, try to enjoy it, study the best you can don't worry so much about your grades. Just do the best you feel you can. It's  a very scarry feeling don't don't you worry there are plenty of other people your age worrying they, just don't have the guts to say so like you did.

  7. well you will need to stay on top of your studies if you want to pass. Once you make yourself do the work and listen it will then just come natural. If its a strict uniformed school it shouldnt be that hard to look good. everyone has to wear the same thing. i am going into 10th and hoped i helped!:)

  8. lol stop stressin first of all!!!!

I haven't been out of school that long and I remember gettin nervous every year. What I have come to realize is that people even teenagers like people who are not worried about every little thing and what people will think. Those are always the popular people.

It's not that hard of a grade if you focus! actually do your homework and study. If you sit down and do it instead of wasting time complaining about it you will have time to do both... get good grades and spend time with your friends.

Most of all tho... just stop worrying. Be a fun loving person and people will love you!!!

  9. k... going into 8th this year, so I should know....

this is what happened with me.....

The work is a LOT harder, but if you take really good notes and concentrate its a breeze....

At my school everyone thought that telling the principle YOUR problems would solve them... so I wouldn't tell anyone anything.... not even your best friend. The whole uniform thing can be solve with stuff like cute scarves, leg warmers, knee sock, cool accesories...junk like that. Keep ALL your tests... that way studying for exams is, like, completely easy. Very important to stay organized... accordian folder works best.

Plus, learn how to spell my....

  10. heres what to expect:

    pot

    smokes

    beer

    hook-ups

    breakups

    drama

  11. lol i just blew off middle school and 9th and 10th and 11th grade just chill until 12th grade its best

  12. lose weight

  13. i am going to 8th grade, and 7th grade was pretty easy. 6th grade was hard. just have some friends and do homework with them, that helps alot, if it wasnt for friends helping me with homework, i would never understand the concept or get good grades.

*tip*:  ALWAYS plan out your home work and projects. it helps alot. and i heard that what you do in 7th and 8th grade affects high school, so be fresh!

im in california. in califoornia, you take the state testings, and  a writing exam. testing is a little different for7th grade in califronia. ask an older person that has been to eight grade.

wear the uniform, but wear some things to look good, like some beades jewlry. it does not have to be new and look the best, and it can make your self look better. wear your hair in a style that makes you look very nice and good. and wear things to even out your body. like if you are tall, skirts look better on tall people. try to see what looks best in the mirror. make your face look clean, and everywhere else. and if you have acne or pimples, try drinking alot o water, it helped for me. and dont wear alot of makeup. wear a little, it looks better and it is better for your skin.

you are worried about your self, so you are ignoring your school preparations. dont do that and start preparing. school will be much better if you are prepared. force your self to do it.

make some friends with the new students, most likey chances with being firends with an old student may be hard becuase they havent found things in common, or they are to shy, or they havnt recognised you much. make new firends, that helps every thing. but dont be BFFs. my parents are strict and dont alow me to go over to my firends, and i think you shouldnt. invite them over, or make sure your parents are watching you.

IF YOU GO TO SCHOOL POSTITIVE AND READY, THINGS WILL COME OUT EASIER.

if you need help contact me.

i have kinda been through wut you have been, cause i am muslim and i wear islamic clothing. i felt wierd being different, but then i found out that i should not, and i had freinds that liked me for what i am inside. i am a good student, and i fought my way through

    good luck

  14. Nah. You'll do fine.

  15. first study and study and listen in class. and tests don'r matter unless you pay attention. uniforms get over it i have to wear uniforms. because you need help from the computer so go start preparing. make new friends. i justed helped you

  16. Getting off the internet is a good place to start if you don't want to nearly-fail again.

  17. we'll the ohio test isn't that hard and in 7th grade u will expect alot more homework and u kinda wont understand anything but u must keep ur head in da books and ask questions.

  18. i just graduated high school.. if you think 6th grade was hard, then just give up and get a job!
