i am going to build an outdoor pond, about 200-300 gallons and i'm going to put Koi and comet goldfish. I would like to give them food that would like to give them food that would help the males milt and the the females produce eggs during season. can someone give me a diet for each of the species or put good food for mating?

ps. i was wondering if you can mate koi and comets?

  1. i feed mine fresh bloodworms, koi pellets everyday  bread and 1slice of orange once a week had all mine in pond for 1 half years now

  2. Koi and Comets are actually a different species of fish - very closely related, but not the same. I've never heard of a hybrid Koi/Comet fish, at the very least.

If you want them to be primed for breeding, feed them live blackworms, duckweed, and those Koi pellets they sell at the store. If you grow duckweed it will give them plenty to eat all the time (plus it's extremely easy to grow and will help your water quality) and there are stories of baby goldfish growing 4X faster than their littermates if kept in a duckweed choked pond vs. their littermates who are only fed pellets.

Apparently, if you keep the water clean, Goldfish will spawn pretty much as soon as they're big enough.

  3. Pellet food is the best staple food you can feed goldfish or Koi IMO.

Though they have different types for each species, their needs are close enough that Goldfish can eat Koi food just fine.

I would use bloodworms as an occasional treat rather than a staple...too much protein can cause digestion problems in goldfish, and bloodworms are solid protein.

Make sure the pellets are small enough that they can swallow them. Too small is better than too big. I feed Koi food to my goldfish (because the goldfish pellets aren't available in my area) and they love it.

...and yes, Goldfish and Koi can breed and produce offspring, but the offspring are (as far as I know) completely sterile.

  4. Goldfish or pondfish food available at your local petstore.

  5. I found this article on Keeping Koi.

  6. blood worm, mosquito larvae, brine shrimps
