What should i feed my tropical fish ?

i am going camping for four days and i was wondering if there was a vegitable that my i could throw in my tropical fish tank while i was away so they wont die of starvation?

alll the pet stores are closed now so i cant get a weekend feeder

You may want to have a friend come by to feed them. Why didn't you think of how they were going to get fed ahead of time?

OK, I used to run an aquarium (though a few years ago now) and we suggested customers should only feed their fish every other day anyway. What kind of fish are they? Some can eat peach or cucumber...though leaving organic food in there may affect your water quality over a period of 4 days. Oh, and don't give them a ton before you leave!

Depends on what kind of fish. If they are vegetarian, throw in some romaine lettuce leaves. If it is a planted tank they will be quite happy grazing on the plants and eating the tiny wildlife(insects) that are always there.

Most fish hobbyists feel that adult fish should be fasted one day a week anyway and that most pet fish are suffering from overfeeding.

In the wild, vegetarians tend to graze constantly and will be quite happy with the romaine lettuce leaves. Most non-vegetarian fish in the wild eat when they can catch their prey, and are perfectly OK if it takes them several days to find someone to eat! Fry need to be fed more regularly than adults. So unless you have some exotic +/or special needs fish they should be just fine. Probably better than if you ask a friend to feed them, because they are more likely to overfeed them and do more harm than if you just leave them for the four days. Good luck & enjoy the camping!

Walmart sells weekend feeders, and so should other places like wallgreens.. etc.

If you feed your fish before you leave, they will be alive when you come back. They wont die of starvation. When my water quality wasnt up to par, I didnt feed mine for 2 days or so. They should live.. but please do check at walmart for a weekend feeder.

Ya by no means put some kinda big piece of food in the water because it will cause the ammonia to spike and might kill your fish. Just feed them well before you go and as soon as you get back and they will be fine. Don't over feed them before you leave because this will make the water bad as well. Mayne even do a water change before you go and add some biological filter stuff to the water. Good Luck

Weekend feeders should do the trick! You can find them anywhere that sells fish supplies or a pet store. Directions are on the back! Good Luck! =]

They will all live for 4 days. Its actually healthy for them to fast every now and then. Your fish will not die over 4 days. Plus veggies will mess up the water if you leave them in for 4 days. ;D Sam
