  1. basically in SLR camera, you have the full control of your shooting mode, and can make you more creative.

some items can help you take control are:

    Aperture

    Shutter speed

    exposure compensation

    etc..

    it's very enjoyable!

since it was my first time to own one few months ago

    good luck

  2. My suggesstion, the egronomics and handling of the based on your point of view because after all, you are going to take photographs with that camera.

The SLR camera should have an Aperture, Shutter, Full manual shooting modes and may be a few preset scene modes such as landscape, protrait, etc.

Canon EOS 450D, Canon EOS 1000D, Nikon D40x, Nikon D80 are good slr to begin with.

  3. Maybe you need to go into a camera store and hold a Nikon D40 with 18-55 mm lens and a Canon XTi with 18-55 mm lens in your hands and just see which feels the best to you.

Both cameras are much more than average ... in fact look at this.
