  1. You really need to figure out what you want to primarily fish for first.  A good bass rod is good for that, not panfish fishing or trout fishing.  I would recommend once you figure out what you want to target, ask questions at your tackle dealer and get the best outfit you can afford, tackle is like everything else in this world, you get what you pay for.  If you find you like fishing, before you know it, you will have more outfits than you ever thought was necessary, and you will still want/need more...lol.

  2. Since you're just getting started, look for what you're comfortable with. What I mean is, get something you can afford and something that feels good to you. If you prefer a 5'6" rod over a 7' rod, go for it. I will tell you though, don't go out and buy the absolute cheapest rig in the store. If you get  "no good" gear and it quickly breaks on you, you may get frustrated with fishing and give it up. Start with a nice spincast or spinning outfit( $20-$40 should net you a good starter rig) and learn the nuances of fishing first. Practice, practice, and practice some more. As you get better you'll have a "feel" for what you like, and will then know what to look for (for yourself.) Start with a nice rod and reel combo, get some 10 lb. Trilene XL line, a lure kit(Wal-mart carries all this), go fishing and have a ball doing it. I've been fishing for years (bass fishing not as long) and I'm still learning what the fish like as well as what I like!

  3. zebco 33 it's cheap if u break it u ain't losing nothing. also try shakespeare ugly sticks nearly unbreakable. usually u can find the 33's in a buy one get one free deal with a rod but the rod is cheaply made and will break eventually.but the reel itself is completely awesome for such a price good luck.

  4. garcia mitchell 300 (ebay) and a 6 or 6.5 foot ugly stick with 20 pound fireline would be really good for anything decent size... bass , catfish...may need a leader to go after smaller fish as this may be heavy line... or you could put on 10lb Stren.

  5. Ugly Stik's are great to start out with.Go to Walmart and you can grab one for like $25 or so.You don't really need 20 pound line unless you're catching huge fish.Since you're beginning I'm assuming you'll be going for crappie, bass or panfish.8-10 pound line would do you just fine for that.

  6. buy yourself a combination rod/reel for about 40 bucks. 15# line and some all around fishing baits. i wouldnt spend too much money because you might not like it as much as your bro. and friends do. you could always sell the stuff to your friends. good luck.
