I am a freshman and I want to work at a ski resort after college. But, I am having trouble in deciding what to major in. I like hands on work and I don't want to sit in an office all day. Anyone that is currently employed at a ski resort, full time, and is making good money, please give me some tips.

  1. I would sway towards accounting or a MBA because businesses could really use people that have those majors.

There isn't a whole lot of hands on work that you can use a major for at a ski resort. I mean you could sort papers for them and work the front desk or something, or you could be a skiing instructor which is very hands-on but does not require a degree at all.

Pick a degree that interests you, and something that won't limit you to working in ski resorts.

  2. Most ski resorts operate as a seasonal business, work for 4 months and then find another job. The year around jobs are mainly maintenance, repair of lifts, paint buildings, replace windows so forth.  Even these jobs pay as little as they can get away with and get a crew to man the job.

I teach full time and the pay rate is about $15/ hour of teaching time. This is about 25 hours a week, other time is paid at minimum wage for the state I'm in. Still less than 40 hours a week.  Then there is the food and room expenses.

Top management and long time employees may make more if they have a reputation that can be used to promote the area. Olympic champions, Winter X Games, so forth.

  3. Running a ski resort is a business. You'd better off majoring in the Business Administration or Marketing.

  4. try working with the rentals.

  5. You should try doing stuff like orthotics so you can work at boot shop. It is a good job and you meet a lot of people. If you get certified that is good two

  6. my degree is in recreation with a concentration in ski area management. Didn't take me long to figure out that the ski business was not where i wanted to be. I was always too busy keeping the public happy to even consider early morning freshies. i fell back onto my art minor and am now living a few miles away from a resort and ski every day. art isn't so popular in the winter as far as my selling season. i just have to save $ to make it through winter.

  7. Lets get real, you think that if you work at a ski resort that you will ski all the time - believe it or not people have to work at the resorts as well - in fact they work a lot

Don't base your major on a very immature thought process,

thinking what major will allow the most time for my hobby

If you really want to work at a ski resort, take a semester off and work at a ski resort and wait tables, you'll soon appreciate your life of leisure in college
