  1. you should play bass if possible...., but if you must, then i would suggest viola just because it is not as competetive, which means you will be better at it, sort of, but either one is fine if you commit.

  2. Violin and viola are *basically* the same thing.

I picked viola because EVERYONE plays violin, and generally speaking a good player of either could switch in just a few months.

It has been proven that playing a viola makes a violin player's playing better so I guess that it could apply to a viola player switching to violin...? I think it has something to do with the viola requiring a bit more on the physical side but I'm getting a bit off topic.

You could have a listen to both instruments and choose the one which you like most. If it doesn't work out, you could switch and you wouldn't be losing out because then you would be proficient in both.

    Whichever you choose, have fun.

PS: Cello sounds the most beautiful to me...it's always another option if you don't mind size.

  3. Interesting question. If you play viola, which fewer people do, you'll be in great demand.

But you may prefer the (I think) wider repertoire of the violin.

Your choice may also depend on if you think you'll continue with the instrument after you graduate.

Can you discuss it with a music teacher or orchestra director?

  4. violin tends to be easier, although if you like the lower sound then go for the viola, but if it were me i would just jump to cello rather than viola
