What should i price my art as? QUICKLY HELP.?

I am selling a piece of art and it is good. It looks like a perfessional did it kind of. However, who I am selling it doesn't have that much money.

1 person i asked said: 175, and she is a artist. and saw my painting. i love that price but i am not sure if my friend can afford it.

2 person i asked said: between 40-60.

i like 175 or 75.

do you think thats too much?

it is my art.

and it is good looking.

Price your art based upon the value of the piece. Most artists over value a new artists work, my brother has been an artist for many years and his first work did not sell due to be overpriced beyond what people would pay for an unknown artists work.

If you think you can PART with the piece for $175.00 then do so. Do not price your work based upon what you THINK someone can afford to pay. You will starve and they will have a bargain.

It is your art to sell at whatever price you wish to charge. . . or for how ever many $$$ you wish to get for it.  With no image, size, or background, no one here will be able to help you.  Be fair with your friend and to yourself.  You must discount it if it is not framed, as your buyer will have that expense in addition tot he price you charge.  

Most beginning artists get between $50 and $75 for an 8"x10" unframed for decent work.  

I have begun journalling all artwork when I finish it, assigning a price, or a price range if it is not framed . . . so I am ready to answer the question "How much?"  It also helps me keep track of what is selling, how much I have sold and for what, and what paintings have been in shows, received awards, etc.  Most of the time I print out a little history or story about the piece, what medium, paper, etc. I used, and how to hang it so it won't be sitting in bright light and maybe losing some of its own brightness!

You have a 50-50 choice to make. In one respect you cannot make such a snap decision without looking at several pieces--or even exhibitions-- before coming to a CONSIDERED opinion. Only an experienced artist has the background to make such decisions quickly--so you're not being fair with the people whom you ask to decide FOR you because you're not giving us any time at all (not to mention asking for a decision sight unseen). On the other hand, if an uninformed snap decision is good enough, why not simply base it on what your friend can afford--or even give it as a present?

Your friend is right, You shouldn't at all put friendship into the equation.  She/He knows what she wants: Your painting.  So sell it to her.  Don't high ball it though.  You don't want a silly thing like a price tag, ruin your friendship.

Its hard to know what your work is worth, but with more awareness of other peoples art and their prices, you can begin to know prices of your paintings.  I agree with the person that said 150-180, with future prices.  You can always come down.  

I always found it hard to part with my stuff though.  "Please let go of the Photo."  "Sir, You've been paid, now please let go."

ad up what you paid for everything you used.

then divide by a guess of what you are going to make with it

then add however much you want to make as a profit.

like everything you used was 100$

then you think you can only make 2 paingtings(lets say it was expensive and small paint. and stuff)

now you want to make a $30 profit.

so the piece would be $80

but you would have to sell 2 to make a profit in that example

Until you have made a name for yourself, I wouldn't go past $200. But anything less than that is, in my opinion, is fair. However, that would depend on what kind of art it is. I've had classmates sell their pastel (chalk) drawings for $100 a piece. If it is an oil painting it could sell for $200. Watercolor is worth less. But if your friend is close to you, I'd say $175 is a fair deal for an oil painting.

$40-60? Please. Don't listen to those people. These days, a shirt could cost that much. If you can't sell it for more than $100, keep it. Who knows, it may be worth more in the future.

well if you are saving up for somehting (ex a house , a car) then i would make it more expensive and mabey 175 but if it was my friend id sell it for cheap or give it to them 4 free

You should price it more than the price of materials you used.

so add in the canvas, the paints, and anything else you had to buy in order to make this piece. you want to make a profit.

I'm assuming you're in high school, and therefore you're an amateur (my apologies if I completely missed the age mark). You don't want to overprice your first pieces so you should go for something cheaper than 100. If you made one professional looking piece, it definitely won't be your last, so keep that in mind.

while high prices sound good, don't forget that this is your friend and a potential patron. keep the prices good for you and your friend to keep this kind of relationship going. that way they won't break their bank and will want to buy more of your pieces. so 40-60 is perfect.
