im not going to 6th form until september '09 but id like to know what As level Subjects i should take? im definately taking maths. thats all i know

i want to have a career based on designing. i dont mind graphic/interior or architecture. im more interested in architecure tho. iv taken art for gcse and although i love the creativity and design elements, i hate the subject, mainly due to my teacher. i also have an interest in languages like spanish or italian. my school doesnt offer a wide variety of subjects. mostly languages, humanities and "academic" subjects.

i just wanted to ask, with my interests, what is a good combination of subjects to pursue a design-based career? i dont want to take a set of subjects that are completely random. however, i would like to take spanish if its possible.

please help!! thank you

  1. If you carried on to do Architecture at university, you'd definitely need to choose Fine Art for A-Level as it is a requirement.

Spanish will always look good as an A-level no matter what, you only need to have the A-Levels that are REQUIRED for the course you wish to do. You didn't state which languages you chose at G.C.S.E so I'm not sure if you could pick them.

Physics would make your choice of Math. look less random as it complements it and would also be relevant to Architecture or any form of three-dimensional design.

If you have an intrest in Graphic Design, I'd take it if you would like to do Design, although if you're school doesn't offer it, you obviously can't.

So I'd choose Math., Spanish, Art and then Graphics if possible or Physics.

  2. English is probably a good one to have, aswell as your maths.

You'll need art or graphic design or something.

You should check up some uni sites and see what they require you to have and go by that.

  3. Architecture is a difficult subject as far as I know, I think it takes around 6 years to do an undergraduate course to qualify as an architect.. but I'm no expert so check out university websites.

As far as I'm aware it is much more important to show skills in maths and science than art, as these are seen as proper academic subjects. You plan to do maths so that's good, but like someone else has said, physics would also be very useful, and would go well with maths.

If you enjoy spanish then I'd say definitely take it, languages always look good and come in useful, and spanish is the third most spoken in the world (or it's pretty high up the list anyway!)

For architecture you need to show a portfolio to show your skill in art (or you need to have taken an art related subject), but you could build this up for yourself. If your school offers an a level in fine art then this is seen as better than art and design by top universities who don't take the latter very seriously.

Everyone thinks english is a good choice, but at my own school, and in my own opinion and from what I've heard, english language isn't all that great. A lot of universities seem to ask for literature rather than language so think that one through.

Finally (and sorry for going on so much!) if you did decide to go into graphics or interior design then I'm guessing you would need an actual qualification in an art related subject so if you're leaving your options open then it's a good idea!

Hope I helped somewhat and didn't ramble on to much, don't worry about your choices too much, and good luck!

  4. I would recommend

Maths, Physics and Graphics! The main ones!

  5. Take Spanish-languages are always useful. I love Spanish-I am gonna take that too when I go.

Graphic design would be good, maybe history?
