  1. Teach them Bible stories. Stories of creation, the flood, Lot, Joseph, Moses, Jesus the list is endless.

You may make them act out some of the stories. Tell you lessons learnt from the stories.

  2. I teach Sunday School to children ages 3-5. Our church purchases a curriculum kit from our larger church body, though it isn't necessary.

I believe the little ones should be exposed to the basic Bible stories that children can relate to. Adam and Eve, Noah and the Ark, baby Moses in the basket, Jonah and the whale, etc.

If I'm not using a curriculum plan from a company, I start with story time, reading the Bible story from an appropriate children's Bible, with nice pictures. For older kids I'll choose a Bible with longer stories; for younger kids I choose one that really sums it up in a short passage. If they seem antsy, I have a puppet tell the story or have them participate in some way (like by shouting out something).

We always do something hands-on related to the story, usually that can be taken home. For example, this Sunday I told about the baptism of Jesus by John and how the sky seemed to open up and a dove came. We made paper doves to take home and hang from the ceiling.

I usually choose one of the common Bible songs and teach that, sometimes with sign language (or gestures).

I like to send the kids home with something about the lesson so they can talk about it with their parents.

  3. Mix stories with Arts and Crafts.  Dancing, acting, singing, puppets.  Depending on what sorts of supplies you are given.

And make sure you discuss the stories, making sure to stress points of importance.  You'll be surprised.  Every group seems to have one kid who's massively advanced and will ask the most amazing questions.

I was shocked when one of my second graders asked me about the difference between Muslims, Jews and Christians, and when I went into a fairly detailed and high-thought level answer (I was checking their comprehension) my group of 1 - 3d graders really got the philosophical differences.

So don't be afraid to try some higher thinking than you think they'll get.

  4. I work in preschool SS too.  Do you want lesson related activities or just something to keep them active?  Give them a nerf ball, and they'll be happy for a long time.  A page to color is always good, with a picture from your story. We have Christian music videos that they like to sing and dance with.  Little relay races are good.  Balloons - challenge them to keep them in the air and not let them touch the ground.  I hope this gets you started!  I'll be interested in what others say!
