What should i wear for the ball?? help.?

im going to a ball this weekend and my friend told me it is a very very high class ball.. he said it is formal.. he'll be wearing a dinner suit and girls have to wear dress.. so i thought of wearing like a cocktail kind of dress and its knee length and black color.. but some people tell me that i should wear a LONG dress instead.. now i am scared than i might wear something stupid and embarass him when i turn up in the ball.. i wont be seeing him until the ball so i cant ask his oppinion about the dress.. i dont know whats other people wearing cause I dont know any of them... what am i going to do?? i thought the knee length cocktail dress look fine but im just afraid everyone wear a long dress and that will make me look dumb.. help~

I'm thinking because it's a ball you should wear a floor length dress. However, as long as your cocktail dress is fancy and elegant you should be fine. The most important thing to wear is a big smile.

Ask your escort if it is a black-tie event.  If so, you must wear a long dress.  If it is a white-tie event you can wear a knee length.  Nothing shorter than that though.  other than that, its up to you.  There isn't any regulations for events on neckline or sleeves, although you may want to bring a sweater because ball rooms are generally FREEZING!
