  1. Depends on the time of year.  I remember we were outfitted in wetsuits when I rafted the Gauley in October.  It was very chilly.  If you are rafting in the fall, wear a swimsuit under your wetsuit.  Fleece is also great in the fall/late fall. It's my favorite river gear!

But....If you're going now, wear sythetics instead of cotton.  A swimsuit and shirt will be fine.  It will keep your body heat in instead of chilling you.  The outfitter may have splash gear you can use on your trip as well.

    Have fun!

  2. My trips rafting down the New River and the Gauley were some of my favorite vacations ever!  You're gonna have a blast.  :)

First thing to know is, no, you probably won't get a wet suit.  You WILL get a life jacket, a helmet, and a paddle.  Make sure that life jacket is buckled on tight, because you WILL fall out of the raft at least once, and likely as not someone is going to grab you by your jacket to haul you back in the raft.

Swim trunks, especially ones that dry off fast and don't get too heavy in the water, should be fine (just make sure they're not too loose, or that fast current may force you into an unplanned skinnydipping session!).

If you want to keep something between your skin and the life jacket (not necessarily a bad idea if you're sensitive or just otherwise grossed out by them), one of the best purchases you can make for your trip is a water shirt like the ones Patagonia makes.  They're a little bit more expensive than the average T, but they're super light and comfortable in the water, and they dry off in about 15 minutes after you're done!  And, they look nice enough that you can wear them as a regular old t-shirt for the rest of the time.  Just go to your local outdoor outfitter or d**k's Sporting Goods, etc.

I'd also recommend bringing some rubbery sandals that strap firmly in place, shoes made for water sports, or any light pair of old sneaks that you don't mind destroying.  And don't forget to take off your watch!

  3. You won't need a wetsuit, but I strongly recommend dressing yourself in synthetics from the skin out.

My typical kayaking (or general boating) "gear" for late spring through early fall consists of (from the skin out): polyester/lycra undershorts, nylon convertible pants/shorts (nice to be able to zip on the legs when I get out and go to a restaurant), and a short sleeve wicking synthetic t-shirt.  This outfit allows me to get wet without minding and, 10-20 minutes after I land, I'm dry enough to get in my car without worrying about the upholstery.

Remember: dress for the water, not the air.  Assume  you're going to get wet and you'll be more comfortable and have more fun.

  4. lol.. no they do not give you wet suits.. at least none of the companies I know of do. Just wear some swim trunks and a t shirt and bring a spare change of clothes (they provide lifejackets). WV rafting is not meant to be all high class and protective.. its meant to be fun and adventureous.. You most likely will fall out of the raft at least once, you will be soaking wet at the end of the ride, and you will have a blast.

Have fun and enjoy all the beauty WV has to offer! =)
