Im 19 years old, roughly 145 pounds, 5' 5" (i dont think that really matters but just thought id give all details)

I'd say Im a pretty average swimmer at a non-competitive level just trying to get into shape. I know its a hard question to answer probably because it varies but what would be a good time for me to try and reach over time? I only ask because Im going to the gym tomorrow and I want to know where Im at because I have no idea what an OK time is.

  1. Why would the gym need to know what your time for swimming is?

Anyways, there are no specific average time for a non-competitive swimmer. This is because no times are taken from them and also it doesn't matter. However, a competitive swimmer would have an average timing for any category and any stroke.

For you, to be able to know exactly how well you should do, you will need to have a proper competitive swimming coach to see and evaluate you. But then again, don't think you really need to do so. The reason why it is hard to give you an answer for this is because there is no way to know through here how well you actually can swim. Because, with a good stroke, then the bar for you would be higher, but if you don have good strokes then the bar would be lower for you.

But I would say, if you can complete 50m free in less than a minute for a non competitive and average swimmer, then you are doing ok.
