  1. A good rule of thumb is 100 times the small blind.  This gives you the amount needed to comfortably wait for the right hands and take the reasonable gambles you feel are right.

  2. Around $40,000. That gives you 40 buy-ins for 5/10. For bankroll management; move down if you fall below 20 buy-ins and move up if you reach 40 buy-ins for the next level.

  3. A bankroll is how much money you have devoted solely to playing that game (not one session).  If you were playing a limit game I would say you need 300 big blinds if you were a winning player.  That would be $3,000 for 5/10 limit.  If you were not a winning player, then there is no bank roll big enough for you.

Since no-limit is much more volatility I would say you need 5 times as much bankroll for no-limit versus limit.

Get $15,000 together if you want to play no limit at $5/$10.

One other consideration is if the game has a capped buyin.  If it is a capped buyin, you may be able to have a smaller bank roll.

  4. most casinos have minimum / maximum buy-ins for poker.

maximum buy-in is suggested, that way if you get a good hand you are not short.

  5. For limit games, 300 "big bets" (as opposed to small bets as another answer mentions) is the norm. i.e. If you're playing 1/2 limit holdem then you should have at least 600$ to overcome the short-term swings that might occur.

For NL Hold'em, then you should have somewhere between twenty and thirty buy-ins. This assumes you're playing max buy-in; i.e. if it is a ranged buying, say, between 50 and 100$, you buy-in for 100$. This means you should have at least 2-3k to properly manage your bankroll.
